Where do I save the £££

arrgghh, its so difficult! less on mobo, more on cpu, less storage, slower storage, more ram.... who actually knows! I am sure what ever I end up with will be far better than what I have that's for sure. bet there are users on here that are younger than my mobo!

the good thing is with pc's you can add and change, prices will always be up and down.

this is probably what i'd get on your budget @mr_m_cox with a 1070 included. this will run rings around a 1060 (roughly 30-40% faster)
(ps this exact 1070 is oos at ocuk, but no one's stopping you to shop around for better prices)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,006.99 (includes shipping: £11.10)

How does this look...
The fans are to replace my existing and very dusty case fans. Other than the stuff below I might add a bigger HDD but other than that I cant see any small £40-£50 upgrade that would actually result in real world performance increase.

and yet, even with budget kind of answering the question for me I am still thinking do I need the Ryzen 1700 and/or x370 chipset!

@4K8KW10 true actually. and the msi board is only one squids more expensive.

@mr_m_cox kolink is a budget psu. it's adequate, but i suspect that most forumers would recommend getting a better quality psu.
also you don't need thermal compund as the cooler has some preapplied.
the wd blue is no faster than a sata600 ssd as it doesnt support nvme, the mx300 is better for £/GB pricing (speed is about the same)
rx580 is about 1060 speeds, win some and lose some - and the 1070 trounces them all
also for the same price (£199.99) why not get 3200mhz ram rather than 3000mhz?

would you go for a RX580-8GB or a 1060-6GB
neck-and-neck really. the 1060 is better for current games, but when newer dx12 games come out, the 580 would be better. also 8gb vram on the 580 vs 6gb on the 1060.
you can't really go wrong with either, however. given that the 1060 6gb is a good £30 cheaper than the 580 8gb currently, then the 1060 would be a better buy for current games.
ofc if you're not gonna change your rig for the next 10 years, then one could argue that the 580 may have better longevity.
also, freesync monitors are cheaper than gsync monitors, which could sway the decision

1060 has never been better and will never be the better. Where did you get this?
All benchmarks show the RX580 has more frames per second, and also its specs say it has more memory. Which means the manufacturer invested more materials for our satisfaction.

1060 has never been better and will never be the better

heh. fair enough. 580 is 2% better. but as the graphs show. for sub dx12, games, the 1060 is better.

Don't skimp on the psu. Get something of better quality like the Bitfenix Formula suggested above.

I would go with the Samsung 850 EVO SSD for the same price. The Crucial MX300 is also fine.

You don't need the thermal paste. The stock cooler has it's own pre-applied.

Just wanted to say a general thanks to everyone to helped me here.

I should be getting the money in early Jan so at this stage I am still re learning the enthusiast hardware world and where my budget puts me.

Your help has been a massive help.

Now I just need to figure out what slant on a general theme I want to go for. I Im sure I will have many questions going forward!

Thanks again all!
