Where do you do your Christmas food shop?

Just been thinking where to pick up a couple of small gifts for xmas and it got me thinking why do we (society as a generalisation) buy loads of cheap low quality food and spend excessively on cheap goods that are now overpriced from big retailers? Example, tesco sausage rolls, toiletries gift box from boots, etc.

I'm wondering if the better thing to do is skip the gifts mostly and everyone brings consumables from farm shops, small business or M&S instead?

Kids just can just open a russian doll presents or something and play with the empty boxes instead. Not serious, but maybe slightly.
