How do you guys know what components to recommend when people come asking for specs?

Are there any decent sites with info on all the latest components and stuff?

Google is your friend.

There are tonnes of hardware review sites oout there, hard ocp /anandtech / toms hardware etc. etc.

If you can't be bothered to trawl through those all the time, its worth picking up Custom PC from a whsmiths once in a while.

CNET.com

but I think most of the knowledge is an amalgumation (spelt horrendously wrong :) ) of many sites

Agreed. You just go about picking stuff up and sort of build your own pot of knowledge.

There's so many people e.g. on these forums that you're bound to find somebody with an interest in, or who has greater in-depth knowledge in an area that you need help in.

Reading hardware sites is great to keep up to date with the latest gear. Anandtech and ***** (that second one's gonna get filtered!) are my faves. But then for people's real-world experiences, and random bits of knowledge you won't find anywhere else, the forums are your friend.

Tomshardware and anandtech are pretty good. It's best to read a few reviews before making a buying decision though as review sites in the past have been proven to be less than impartial as well as less than honest.

I would say Tom's is one of the less impartial ones. Many people would claim that THG shows a pro-Intel bias.

Hardware review sites don't hold respect for long if they're obviously biased, though. There are so many clued-up people out there ready to challenge everything they say, which tends to keep them pretty honest.

I just go into the HARDWARE section on OCUK forums where I can learn that Intel is bad, Apple is bad, NTL is bad etc.
I don't listen because I've got all three.

Theirs loads of places, here, guru3d, tomshardware. Theirs literally a never nding string of review sites, just google for the review you want and it should be available.

People liek me just liek to follow the latest releases, but others could tell you very in depth info.

maybe im being funny but didnt you guys learn yourselves? e.g. got your first pc played doom, upgraded the pc, then decided network'd etc?
i know for things like the latest graphics cards you check them out via reviews online, but i mean basic things like installing graphics cards or memory or perhaps a cpu. those things you cant really have a website setup for it.

learnt over the years of being into building computers :)

Good-old-print  Some magazines like PCW are quite good.

But there's a-lot more online, especially here (OcUK) & its interactive.
