Hey all,

A while back I was looking for speakers for my gaming rig. I had a fairly low budget and I wanted good digital sound for gaming and watching tv at uni.

So naturally I got Logitech Z-5400 Digital 5.1 Speakers for around 90 quid.

Now I am looking for speakers for my htpc system for my lounge on a similar sort of budget. For some reason I cannot find DTS surround speakers anywhere for this sort of price. The only system Logitech are offering these days is the Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speakers(which is awesome my Dad has these on his media system) which is massively over the money I was looking at.

What's the deal with this? Anyone have any ideas?

Firstly, I would remove the link from the competitor site, the dons of OCUK will not look kindly upon us mere mortals posting links to their competitors.

Secondly, DTS is digital, so naturally you want speakers that connect via optical or coaxial. The Logitech speakers you linked are not digital, they are analogue. You won't find anything with digital for your price point.

Edit: My apologies, the speakers are indeed digital. Didn't read the title. :p at first glance I thought they were an analogue set that looks similar.

You got them for £60? Blimey, that was quite a find. Don't think you will have much luck now finding any digital speakers for that price. Could be wrong, but I haven't seen any.

The Z-5400 are actually digital, well the ones I have definitely are. They have dual optical input and it can decode Digital audio which are connected to my on-board sound via TOSLINK cable. I got these speakers for sub £100. I can't believe they are not being sold anymore as they are brilliant.

My main issue is that there doesn't seem to be a replacement system with DTS only analogue which is a real shame. The Z-5500 speakers does have dual optical input with the ability to decode digital audio but they cost over £200 which is over my budget.

I am wondering why this is the case. There used to be a handful for surround sound systems that offered DTS and now it seems to have almost disappeared.

P.S. Thanks for the heads up I have edited out the links on my OP.

Ah sorry that meant to say 90 quid :P. I guess I will have to come up with some other ideas.

Even so, £90 is a good buy, considering the Z-5500 is normally more than £200. You are not wrong though, they don't seem to be widely available anymore. Maybe the demand for digital PC speakers is not there. With more and more people building HTPC's, perhaps they are going for AV receivers and separates speakers. With gamers sticking with analogue, that leaves digital 5.1 PC speakers in no mans land, and maybe why they are less common now.

Indeed, that was my trail of thought.

Perhaps I should just get a really good headset for the pc and move my speakers to the lounge and look at a more pricey option when my budget is a bit more grand. :P

I know this is completely unrelated - but i just wanted to say - i have the z5400's too and they are mind blowing for the price! - 3 digital inputs, 4 analog inputs (2 when using surround), and a head phone socket! Picked them up for about £100 too, will not be beaten on price / performance.

Im looking for some speaker stands for the satellites can anuybody recommend any that will fit the speakers?

Sorry for derailing - why not use the z5400's and by another set for the pc for <£100?
