i must be doing something wrong, but just installed 8.1 and there is no start button

there is a box of 4 squares, which flicks between the start screen and the desktop but i thought it restored a windows 7 like start button ?

Nope, I don't see what peoples problem is with the Start Screen is anyway  Everythings there it's just laid out differently.

well , first initial impression is that the start menu allowed you to structure apps inside folders, the win 8 start screen just feels more unorganized,

i guess it needs some time to get used to

Some say it's crap.

Some say it's just different and summet new to get used to.

Switching from Win 98 to XP was deemed crap, but it was just different.

It's cause XP to Win 7 was not that different and most folk felt OK with it.

We will all have to get used to the new lay out eventually.

well ill give it some time before making a proper conclusion, though my initial feeling is that i dont like it. .

Having not booted into Windows 7 for a number of months until recently, felt very weird. Looking for things to slide out of the right of the screen and expecting the metro menu to pop up from the win key. Out of habit left that gimped feeling. Felt like, where's my information!

Windows 7 feels like 9x to Windows 8 as 98 felt to XP. It's strangely odd as I still love Windows 7.

Yes It feels better when you have the machine booting straight to the desktop.

I just remove all the Apps on the Metro screen apart from Desktop. Then just add my own shortcuts. Ones like "Documents etc. My storage drives and my fav an most used apps.

It starts looking at feeling better that way. Does for me anyhow.

A lot of people however didn't like XP->Vista but are fine with Windows 7 even though in many ways there isn't a huge difference between Vista and 7.

What a lot of people seem to miss is that there is quite a subtle level (and often different from person to person) in the way that people use an operating system where even a fairly small change mounts upto an annoying level of extra effort over the course of a day not to mention some people just plain don't work with an OS in the same way others do.

I find it really tiring when people say "but you can just start typing in Windows 8 to find X which is really cool/useful so why don't you like the OS" and can't comprehend that the feature doesn't fit in with the way I use the OS and doesn't increase efficency for me if I did adapt to use it, it might be a useful progress for them from older OS but it has no impact and potentially a negative one if forced to use it, for me and for a good percentage of users.

Is it crap? No. If I had a tablet or phone and didn't want to drop the money on an iOS device I'd get a Windows one.

Is it better than Windows 7 for non-touchscreen users? I'm sorry, but it's just plain not. Some people seem to like it mainly on the fact that it's "different" but Windows 8 just isn't a move forward for people on Windows 7.

I keep trying to force myself to like it but I shouldn't have to force anything. I should just boot up W8 and it feels better to use. And it never has.

I've organised as if it was a tablet (OblyTile makes things much prettier). I've actually started using some metro apps side by side with the desktop as well. However, I still feel better with a start menu when working so I installed StartIsBack (now StartIsBack+) for it. I gave Start8 a go before that and both are pretty much very, very similiar in terms of features but went with StartIsBack as the licence was cheaper.
