I know its in New York but what area or block? Like in Peep Show where the block of flats they live in actually exists in Croydon is the same true for Friends?

I always thought that street and central perk looked really like a studio set.
Still, not too sure. I bet Google will know though....

from Wikipedia

The series was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.

Throughout the series' run, no episodes were shot on location in New York.

When i was last in New York we managed to find the block in which it was meant to be set. It is in Greenwich Village at the corner of Grove Street and Bedford Street which is to the west of Washington Square park.

Almost all sitcoms are film on sets, and they hardly ever go on locations.

The exceptions are shows like Sex and the City (technically not a sitcom), and I remember an episode of Frasier was shot in Seattle.

Don't you think its a bit weird that the characters in it seem like average earners and yet are able to afford big apartments in prime locations in New York?

Have you not seen it? it explained in an episode how she can afford that place, its basically to do with her grandmother. I think the city of NY still thinks her grandmother still live under there, and in NYC there is something call rent control, i haven't seen it in ages but it's on the line of that.

I have no idea what your are talking about

Well, rent control basically control the rent of apartments in NYC, so landlords can't put them up even if they want to.

The apartment USED to belong to Monica's grandmother, and as far as the NYC Council is concern, the grandmother still lives there hence rent control is still in place. And her grandmother doesn't anymore obviously but monica is still paying rent in her grandmother's name (i think), and hence the low rent.

Central Perk does exist, but it goes by a different name.

I'm pretty sure it was a set at WB.

We did the warner brothers tour last year and all of the big sound stages have lists of all the stuff thats been filmed in each one, films tv programs etc. The friends one has it's own special plaque :)

For part of the tour they take you to a room in the prop store which is a total replica of the central perk set. The story is all the stuff was set to be binned/put into storage when the series ended but they used it to recreate the coffee shop for a Jay Leno special on the series. They kept this in the end and now show it off on the tour, seemed to be a popular thing. Sadly it did feel a bit cool sitting on the sofa and just nosing around, sad I know lol

Also did you know in the first series the 'view' out the coffee shop window was just a painted background and it wasn't until the second series they had the street bit actually outside.

Now why can I retiain information like that after someone telling me once yet fail to remember so many other things. I have no idea what my wife's mobile number is, it's in my phone but that's all I know :)
