Hi all, Merry Christmas

My very good friends son has an idea for a game, he is only young and asking me for advice and i feel a little helpless in this field.

My question is... Is there a reputable website that will listen to his idea for his game?

I tried to explain to him that my programming knowledge of computers only goes as far as web design, CSS, javascript and a little databasing.

He does not understand (yet) the difference with the above and the likes of C++ and Java, but i do not want to discourage his ambition to work in the field of computers. He is a couple of years young of his 16th Birthday (so college and further education is not available to him yet) and showing a great knowledge of computers.

If anyone knows of any links or advice that i can tell him then please post here.

Many thanks in advance. :)

Unfortunately, no one will be willing to listen to his idea for a game. If he is interested in games and computers, you can direct him to some level editing tools like Hammer, UnrealEd etc. These allow you to create levels using similar tools to what profressional level / game designers use - tis a good way into the industry as well (if you're good).

yeh.. If he's into fps games (eg unreal tournament... even though underage ;)) then modding might be a good way to go. UnrealScript is relatively easy and you can make some quite big changes without too much coding, although for a 14 year old it might be a bit tricky. Easier with some past experiences of classes / objects etc. In terms of coding HL2 / Source is much harder to mod as it's all C++. Half the battle is setting up the development environment.

And then there's always mapping as above.

If you get him to create maps, we are always looking for new maps for our gungame server. We have 1 or 2 good mappers in our clan which create maps for CS:S in Hammer. Its pretty easy to get to grips with at first, and does offer very advanced options for doing it. He is welcome to come to our forums and post up some maps if he creates them and we may test them on our servers.
