Afternoon All,

After a few months of sitting on the side, I've finally purchased components to build a new computer :)

The crucial components include:
  • C2D 6320
  • Crucial Ballistix 2GB 5300C3
  • Gigabyte DS3P
  • BFG 8800 GTS 640MB
  • Tuniq Tower Cooler
  • Coolermaster iGreen 600w PSU

I have my copy of Vista Ultimate at the ready, but as I am more familiar with XP, would it be worthwhile testing out my overclock on XP first?

I've also read through some of the overclocking guides, and I get a bit confused; so could someone give me a few easy pointers on where to start with the DS3P (what settings to being with, and how to push them up, which software should be used to test, etc).

Many Thanks!
Craig

And don't start with a massive overclock trying to get 3GHz+ straight away.

For testing use orthos along with other stress testers, but it's all covered in the appropriate guides above.

Cheers for the links :)

Received mobo, ram and heatsink today, CPU due tomorrow.

Will need to wait for the graphics card and PSU to arrive before commencing OC.

Great news, I've built the system and have a slight overclock in operation.

I've uped the vcore to 1.45v and given the RAM an adittional 0.3v. Currently have the CPU running at 2.45ghz from the stock 1.86ghz.

I will continue with the overclock tomorrow.

I have one small issue, I've whipped the Tuniq Tower into my case, but i cannot get the side panel back on as the tower hangs out by about 2cm!

I really didnt want to get rid of my Coolermaster Wavemaster, but this might be the end of it. Does anyone have any recommendations of a nice new shiny case that will be a good home to my Tuniq Tower?

I've also had an issue getting the Tuniq Tower fan speed control to fit in a PCI slow, the dial wont fit through the gap! Anyone else had this issue?

I seem to be having difficulties getting my overclock above 2.45ghz.

I have noticed that when I apply more than 1.6v to the vcore, under the BIOS health status, it shows a FAIL for vcore rather than OK. Is this normal?

The same happens for the RAM when I apply any more than 3.3v.

Has anyone got the Ballistix RAM to run higher than 800mhz?

with the E6300 and 6320, you should be able to get 3GHz with 1.4v, set memory to +4 for the balistix stock volts and on the bios main screen press CTRL+F1 to open the advanced memory timings setting, set FSB to 435 and set memory to 1:2 so it should be exactly twice the FSB, that will get you a nice 3.04GHz clock

Can you confirm the following will be correct before I fry my RAM:

Ballistix stock voltage 2.2v, +4 = 2.6v?

Cheers

OK, +4v on RAM, and the system will boot Windows with an FSB of 375.

Anything above that, Windows will BSOD, and anything above 400 results in the computer doing a restart cycle over and over again :S

with the DS3 and DS3P it sets memory voltage to 1.8 so +4 = 2.2 which is balistix stock volts, if windows is BSOD you might want to try slackening timings and for the 400+ try taking up MCH voltage to +1

At the risk of being very rude indeed, it seems pretty obvious to me that you haven't read the two links that Cob provided. If you had, you wouldn't be asking about the RAM voltage or trying to blow your CPU's brains out with 1.6V.

READ THOSE LINKS. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. You will get better results, and much faster.

Just a little quicker, yes ;)

It runs quite tight timings for PC8000 :)

But for PC8500 you need to slacken them off a little.
