Because VLC is the best player out there? :D

It plays loads of stuff but I often get errors with it, fast forwarding through some video clips causes corruption too, I don't know if this is specific to file type.

It is pretty good though

I don't get that problem, but I rarely fastforward or rewind.

I just love that it has played every video file I throw at it :D

There was a free open source animated film on bittorrent(think its legal), forget what it's called though.

From the linked microsoft page:

Optimum Configuration
(to play 1080p video with 5.1 surround sound)
# Windows XP
# Windows Media Player 10
# DirectX 9.0
# 3.0 GHz processor or equivalent
# 512 MB of RAM
# 128 MB video card
# 1920 x 1440 screen resolution
# 24-bit 96 kHz multichannel sound card
# 5.1 surround sound speaker system

1920 x 1440 screen resolution - 1440 ??? I thought 1200 was sufficient, in that 1200 > 1080

http://www.zudeo.com/

The above has links to legal downloads of videos (no illegal stuff there). There is an HD section there as well.

You do not have to use the zudeo application - just download the torrent file and use in your favourite torrent app).

1200 is enough. I think the 1440 is to take into account if you're playing in a window and not in fullscreen.
