I'm in the middle of planning a new website which includes car data. I want to know if anyone knows where to get the make and model info that web sites like autotrader use and car insurers.
Usually manufactuer's specs - they have all that stuff listed in the brochure for the car. That's where I tend to see that sort of information (having had a number of brochures recently). Not sure anywhere else you would obtain that kind of information because all of it would have to be released by the manufacturer for printing.
You could look for a webservice - not sure if there are any for car data, if there is it may be a on a pay basis, Web Service Catalogue . Failing that write yourself a screenscraper to get the data?
Unless it is printed from the maufacturer's brochure/specs, they are all privately owned copyrights. Seeing as most places which sell cars etc just copy and paste the manufacturer's specs, it would seem there is an 'open' copyright on the specs themselves (I would credit the manufacturer anyway) or it wouldn't make too much commercial sense but you never know in this day and age.
Hopefully someone who has done IP law could clear this up, I'm not too hot on that subject and my sister (only person I personally know to have done IP) is busy. I'll try and get back to you on it though.
