where to get timber?

What type of timber in particular? Your basic 2X4 softwood?

Hardwood for furniture making. Oaks to expensive, Far Eastern Meranti looks like a good price compromise on that site, although still expensive. Maybe European beach as that's pretty cheap but uninspiring.

Found this, European oak is quite cheap http://www.venbros.co.uk/sawn-to-size-oak/

Going back many years there was a great place in Yeovil from memory that did all sorts of wood, everything from Oak to Mahogany in pretty much every size from offcuts suitable for making plaques and small clocks, to furniture or renovations.

I used to visit it every time we went down to see one of my Uncles, as he lived near it, and the place was great if you were into woodwork as a hobby.
We've still got several boxes of offcuts/rejects (I think they did memorial plaque blanks, and clock blanks on site), that were bought for projects.

Unfortunately I think it's been about 10 years so I've no idea what they're like now.

I've got wood, right here.

But seriously. I bought wood from local timber yards, quick, easy and very helpful.

Local one closed down over a year ago. And the other local one is expensive. When your talking hardwood there's a large range of prices and when its so darn expensive makes buying locally not always the best

Making a picnic table out off scavenged 2x4 atm. And thinking if it goes well, I'll try something like a bed side table.
