As title really, the old girl is starting to struggle a little and thought it might be nice to fit something shiny and new.

Problem is, I cant make my mind up between an R9 390 or a GTX 970, or just wait for the sapphire R9 480.

Any thoughts on the current cards, don't really want to spend above £250, so looking for best bang for buck.

Cheers for reading, :)

Sapphire Nitro 480, no doubt about it. 390 is okay too, but the 970 is basically an obsolete buy now unless you get it for cheap used.

I'd go for a 480 with a nicer cooler - the Sapphire Nitro looks pretty good.

Seeing as you've already got a rig it might be worth holding out a little and seeing if the 1060 brings anything interesting to the table

zomg stop recommanding older gen GPUs :D
sapphire nitro 480 is the best pick for 250£, and quite the performance boost also.

Wait for the GTX 1060 if it's around £250 and offers or exceeds 980 performance it'll be a beast of a card. That's all the rx 480 had to do instead it failed to do that and overclocked 480 vs overclocked 970 the 970 wins out most of the time.

At 1080p the Sapphire RX 480 looks like it will be really good for that price. If I wasn't at 1440p and decided I could afford a bit more I would have bought one myself.

I would wait till the 19th and see how much the GTX 1060 sells for and what the reviews are like

Nvidia unveils the GTX 1060: Faster than a GTX 980 for $250

Nvidia has unveiled the GTX 1060, the most affordable member of its Pascal-based graphics card lineup yet. Starting at £240/€279/$250 Nvidia claims the GTX 1060 is faster than a GTX 980—a card that costs upwards of $400 (£380)—and features a power-sipping TDP of just 120W.
It'll be released worldwide on July 19.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were reference models for around that. I also wouldn't be surprised if they were a lot more, guess we'll have to wait and see :)
Wouldn't surprised me at all

As nvidia going be aiming to take sales away from the new AMD 480 and nvidia knows that not going to happen if they price it to high..

If you care not about a few extra pennies in power there's currently:

Sapphire Nitro R9 390X £252 300w+

390X is on average 10% faster than 390 but over 20% dearer so the better price/perf goes to:

Sapphire Nitro R9 390 £208 ~300w

I expect this to trade blows with the:

Sapphire Nitro RX 480 £250 (pre-order) ~175w

choose your poison.

If they are claiming "much faster than RX480" for the GTX1060 you can pretty much guarantee it will be dearer still.

Lol, do you work for Nvidia? Let's wait and see those "around £250" and "exceeds 980" after it's released, shall we?

So to answer Davinnicus's question: I would wait and compare between RX 480 Nitro (as its £250 price bracket is already confirmed) and GTX 1060. I would not recommend Nvidia's Founder Edition as it is basically a rip-off, especially when you are on a budget.

Another vote to the Sapphire RX480 Nitro, or Gigabyte RX480 G1, or Powercolor RX 480 Devil 13.
All three are coming around the same time, so pick the one with the highest stock clocks and best cooler. And looks like Powercolor 3 fan cooler, might be the winner here.
(and that from a Sapphire owner of 3 out of 4 cards the last 5 years, the 4th was Gigabyte 780 Ghz).
