OK, after some advice for upgrading my gaming rig.

Spec as in the sig. Newest component is the GPU which I had to buy to replace a failing 280GTX, so that will likely stay, as will the case, optical and hard drives, sound card and PSU.

I am not after ultimate performance or 3Dmark bragging rights, but I want a decent workhorse that will give me solid base for the next couple of years. My Q6600 has lasted me more than 3 years now, but she feels like shes chugging more and more as time goes by.

I was looking at a i5 2500k, m/board and 8 or more GB of RAM, which can squeeze in between £350-400 to buy now, then look at maybe new GPU(maybe Sli/xfire) later in the year. I know people are saying wait for Ivy Bridge, but I have the itch and spare cash, which is never a good combination. Would mostly be playing FPS games like RO2 and BF3, and some sim stuff like FSX, DCS and iRacing. Don't do any kind of professional video editing or the like, just gaming really.

Thoughts?

i5 is very good for gaming, but it is basically more expensive now than it has ever been.
Take a look at some of the OCUK bundles for an i5 with a Z68 motherboard for an idea of components and pricing.
You can pick up a "Gen3" motherboard, which will work with both Ivybridge CPU's and PCI-E 3.0 graphics cards.
I took the leap and ordered an i5 bundle over Christmas, but you could equally hold on to what you've got until the new stuff comes out... Up to you really.
I know that the bundle will allow me to upgrade to either Ivybridge, PCI-E 3.0, or SLI when I need moar power.

Yes, already thought about getting a Gen3 for future proofing.

Is it worth getting more than 8GB of RAM, given its still reasonably priced, is it worth getting 12 or 16GB, just for the hell of it, or is it just a waste?

Well you'd want to go 16GB I think as 12GB would mean you're not running your memory in pairs.

8GB would be plenty enough, but if you've got the cash to burn and at the price some of the RAM is at at the moment, then why not go 16GB!

I would go for a Gen 3 board, 2500k and the RAM. As said already, at least you're future proof!
