All over.
I'm going to starting a grad scheme in Bristol, specifically Filton, in October. Having never lived in Bristol before, I have no ideas what places are nice/crap.

Can anywhere suggest areas that are "nice" but not too expensive to rent in Bristol?

Also, it would be nice to know what it's like to live there (other than the last two nights ;)). Any decent places for a night out, restaurants, things to do etc.

Cheers :)

Quite a lot of student lets in Filton Avenue itself. Not a brilliant area but its ok.

Probably looking at around £260-320inc. for a smallish room.

Lot of demand in the area at this time of year....

Rent in Stoke Gifford which is right next to Filton. I rented in Horfield which is a dump then moved out to Stoke Gifford. It's a different city, way nicer on many levels.

It's not bad out here in Yate/Chipping Sodbury, AFAIK rent is cheaper than places in the city itself, and not far from Filton at all. There is a pretty decent shopping centre here (including one of europe's largest Tesco's currently being built, if that's your bag lol), and you can have a good night out in Sodbury high street if you don't want to venture into the city centre.

There are a couple of areas here you might want to avoid (Cranleigh Court estate being the main one) but over all it's not a bad little town really.

I do have a empty property at the moment but am sorting the electrics out in it and it will be a couple of weeks until finished and thats in yate!
I am going to turn into shared house as its 4 beds

^^ What Drexel said. Not the most exciting place in the world but not bad. Easy to get into Bristol, and cheaper than living there!

clifton prices are lower than they were. Loads of studenty lets around there now

yate/sodbury are cheap, but poor if you want a social life in the city, cab fares are 30+ at night

i live in horfield myself, and it's a good fighting weight - a nice distance from the city but not too far. some nice pubs etc as it is slowly becoming a graduates area rather than a student area

I thought Clifton was a rather expensive area ?

It's one of the more expensive area's to live, but it's not really that expensive to live there if you're sharing a house.

I'm not so sure about Yate though, I remember seeing it featured in one of those 'Crap Towns' books, so pay it a visit before moving there! ;)

Haha. yeah I remember it being featured in that book, it was more a tongue-in-cheek reference to it being a fairly dull and unexciting place to live, just a slice of generic 'new town', the epitome of 'meh' if you like, rather than being a particularly bad place to live.

I personally think that's a bit unfair, there are some good pubs and places to eat around here, the shopping centre has pretty much any shop you'll need, and you can have an absolutely cracking night out in Sodbury high street.

I remember the whole book was pretty tongue-in-cheek, so I took whatever it said with a pinch of salt. ;)

I must admit I've only been there once or twice myself and it was only to those industrial units so I guess I really need to see it for myself really. :)

The Gloucester Road area around Stokes Croft is actually really nice - a bit edgy, but some great pubs/bars and a bit of a bohemian vibe going on. To far north and you start getting towards St Paul's which is rough. But south you start heading towards Redlands and Cotham Park which are both OK.

You could live more or less anywhere along glos rd/filton avenue and still be close to 'work' (where is it exactly?) but also close to interesting bits of Bristol. Bishopston/St Andrews IMO is the next best thing after the Centre (inc clifton). Your right near Gloucester road which is brilliant, and only a short walk/cab to town plus the houses are old so not ridiculously small.

Well if you don't count the Tesco troubles and this weeks troubles I guess but otherwise I'd agree :)
