Where to mount TV?

Hi all,

I got a project house about 5 years ago and I'm finally on the last 2 rooms, living room and dining room. I've taken the wall out between the two rooms as it was the only realistic way of getting 2 sofas in the room but now I'm stuck on where to put the TV.

Being the sad person I am, I've measured and modelled out the room in CAD to try and work out the best layout.

I was initially thinking the left option with the TV in the corner of the room, as both sofas can view the TV but there's a pinch point moving between the sofas when moving rooms, one sofa is also quite close to the log burner and it's a bit cramped in the dining space.

The right option has a small pinch point when entering the room but otherwise much more space all round, the downside is the TV needs to be mounted above the log burner (log burner installer said this is fine as along as a mantle is fitted). TV's mounted above fireplaces seem to be universally hated by most because of the height, though the bottom of the TV is only 1m from the ground.

Wife and I have been back and forth on this for hours, it's such an awkward room space wise.

Any thoughts?

Ah thanks, tried a different host. Any luck now?

It works!

I would personally opt for the first, the others look like they're relatively high on the walls and I do not enjoy craning my neck to watch TV. I suppose if you're big into recliners, but the first also offers by far the best overall viewing space if you've a bunch of people watching.

It also looks like it has solid room for a 3.1 AVR or soundbar setup, whereas that would be almost impossible to work with the other suggestions.

We'd settled on the first option but that requires the 2 seater to edge into the dining room which makes getting in/out of the chairs bit of a squeeze.

It's annoying as we've done the electrics, plumbing got it plastered last week and only now are we doubting it all again :D

Put the size and height on with masking tape but it's hard to gauge how it'll feel with no sofas currently in the room.

If your living room is primarly for socialising and not for TV viewing, then probably the first option and have the wood burner as the main focal point.

But if TV viewing is going to be 90% of the room use, then maybe something like this could work, where the two seater sofa is for guests. Surrounds/Rear would be mounted high on the wall, leaving an access path behind the sofa.

I'd go with a phantom centre due to the complications of the wood burner, so a 4.1 setup. I've not placed the sub anywhere yet.

Thanks all.

Perhaps I should have asked this in the Home section rather than TV, as I appreciate most replies here are going to be more biased towards a good TV setup Vs usable floor space :D

A mount that can tilt would sort the viewing angle out. I prefer my TV to be lower down, but if space won't allow it.

If you aren't getting a surround system, then it would be the corner for me.

Above the log burner as low as possible. People obsess about TV being too high. I don't mind it a bit higher than what most would accept and I think corner positions are a waste of space and not good for sound. Plus the room layout is more spacious with it there anyway.

I think this option wins to be honest. Been back and forth a lot on it but the base of the TV is only 1 meter off the ground so it's not as high as some people mount them.

Just makes the most sense for the house I think.

I wouldn't put a TV above a fireplace if I actually planned on watching things on it. It's too high...

yeah top of my TV is where highest point of my manubrium is.

That doesn't look like the ideal "cinema room" if that was priority I'd lower the TV...but then have no fire which sucks.

Getting audio system in there would be tricky probably need to look at on wall speakers

TV too high there. Especially relative to the sofa position in the render. Even pushed back against the wall it'll be too high.

Just put it above the fireplace and stop worrying about it. A 65” TV in the corner is going to take up a ridiculous amount of space. Flat screens were made to be mounted on walls.

how far away would the sofa opposite to chimney be ? is it far enough to justify a 65" tv or will it be too dominating/close.

a smaller tv in the corner at 30degrees against sidewall provides better opportunity to see it when you are eating ...
could first try a tv in the corner on a coffee table to see how it feels before putting brackets on chimney;
for someone lounging on window sofa, would have a better angle too

I’d position the TV in the corner and consider dropping to something around 50–55". A 65" set feels overwhelming in what looks like a fairly compact room. As others have pointed out, mounting it above the fireplace leaves very little distance between the sofa and the screen, which is a recipe for an awkward viewing angle and a stiff neck. Anyone sitting on the smaller sofa would also end up with a pretty terrible angle toward the TV.
