Where to now - I'm a bit fed up

Right well a "simple" AGP upgrade 6800GT to X1950 pro didn't go to well entailing a new mobo and C2D

I then thought a PCIE card would be more appropriate (given that immediately after clicking confirm order the price reduces by £30) and future proof so along came a Sapphire X1950XT. To my surprise it was slower than the Pro in 3D05 until it was overclocked a bit then went ahead.

Treated myself to COH and get really bad artefacts after a few minutes play. Clocks back to stock and Cats 7.01 and 6.12 tried

So if I have a duffer where to place the dosh now ?

TIA

How about a HIS PCI-E x1950 pro and a little change? Very reasonable price and the performance isn't too shabby either...

Plus you get the IceQ3 cooling system which makes your CPU run cooler (exhausts the warm air out of one of the slots)

There's something wrong there. There's no way an X1950Pro should outperform an X1950XT.

Here's what I got:

3d05

Stock

Pro 9506, XT 9070

OC C2D to 2.71

Pro 9787, XT 9484

OC XT to 655/927: 11226

He does and that isn't right, as the Pro is essentially an x1800XT with a revised GPU, the 1950XT has 12 more pixel shaders and should definately be faster therefore.

My money is on the 430W PSU not being up to handling an OC'd c2duo and a X1950 class card...

That's money wasted. The X1950Pro consumes 60W less than an X1900XT/-X and I'm running my rig on an Akasa 460W PSU, a friend of mine is running the same spec I am on an Antec 380W PSU with no problems at all.

I can't speak for the X1950XT as I am not sure of its power requirements, but I can't imagine them being any higher than an X1900XT and so a 430W PSU would be more than adequate.

I like how everyone here has missed my several thousand threads and posts on the fact that the X1950XT has no driver support. The drivers with the card, the 7.1s, the Omegas, all of them - zero, zilch, nada support for the X1950XT. Have fun with your wasted purchase.

You're the only person I know who can't get the 6.10s on the CD to work.

Oh, they work. They just don't give the expected performance. X1950XTs with latest drivers work at 70-80% of their expected performance (assuming they replace directly the X1900XT).

Ah right, I thought you meant that the drivers didn't work at all (like you were running on the default XP VGA drivers or something, that would suck.)

That's the price you pay for being an early adopter though. :( But they should sort their drivers out.

I think they'll get around to the proper support in time for Vista. A lot of stuff to get ready in time for that, so maybe then :)

The HIS x1950 pro I have benches @ over 11K on a stock 6600 and on stock cpu/RAM figures. it really is a cracking card. :)

Time for an update

I have discovered that the act of OC'ing the C2d from 2.4 to 2.71 is enough to starve the X1950XT of power. 3D05 is OK but games artefact like mad (e.g. COH)

So I could:

1. Upgrade the PSU (that XT is pretty noisy though)

2. HIS X1950pro but AGP or PCIE (before you reach for the smelling salts) I ask because this an interim step and which would be better for resale ?

1. Upgrade PSU - that's not a part you want to go *bang*
