Where to put my programs?

Evening all,

I am using Mint Linux right now and used Ubuntu before. I want to install some programs that I have downloaded, I am just wondering where to put the program files? I don't want to leave them on the desktop so which is the best folder to put them in?

You could put them in a hidden folder in your home (~/). They would only be available to you, not any other users on the system, but that's not usually a problem. To make a hidden folder you just need to put a dot in front of the name, then press crtl+h in a file browser to see it.

Do you know how to make a launcher for it in the menu? It's pretty easy using the gnome menu editor, which i think is still in the repos :)
 
Thanks for your quick reply , i shall put them into hidden folders. I have done launchers before , so that will be my next job.

Out of interest, is arch linux any good? It seems to be highly regarded but with a reputation for being a harder to use distro.
