So I have an occulus quest 2 and a 4090, I've not yet looked at SteamVR and was wondering if anyone had some recommendations for older games that work well with it or just some good titles to start with really as I have no idea where to begin.

first question is do you want to do PCVR or Standalone/Quest VR?

what game types do you enjoy?

suggestions:
Demeo
walkabout mini golf
dungeons of eternity
halflife alyx - PCVR
The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets
spacefolk city

IMO, VR is at its best with racing and flight sims.
Most newish racing games now support VR.
You might already have Elite Dangerous. War Thunder is free (to see what it’s like) and DCS has a couple of maps and a couple of aircraft to try out

Be aware that it’s likely to give you nausea if you’re new to it and play for an extended period of time. That goes away for most.

It's mostly my kids who use it if I'm honest, wr have a few games from the meta store. I was wondering about the broader selection and use of steamvr, making use of the hundreds of games I already have there.

I don't think I have any racing games actually. Are these games ok your recommended list VR only?

Personally the game that really did it for me was modded Fallout4VR. Let me caution you to say the barrier to entry and setup can be brutal but when it is up and running it is insane.

following that I'd say helicopter simulation in DCS is hard to beat, but the buy in for controllers etc is tough if you dont already own some its more of a hobby thing, same goes for racing.

HL:Alyx is the obvious choice, The Room VR:Dark Matter is good if you like puzzle games or escape rooms.

Personally I'd avoid Meta store games unless you want to play them with your kids.

these ones for racing:
Assetto Corsa

Automobilista 2 - the current ocuk social group game prefernce on thursday nights.
i havent been able to get in to it, for various reasosn, so i need to go back to it later.

there are lots of games that can be modded to enable VR and there are games that are VR supported.
my original list is on both quest and PC

No Mans Sky - has native VR support
The Room VR: A Dark Matter

can be modded to VR
Deep Rock Galactic
Crysis

VR supported steam list :

to potentially usfull links :

its a bit hard to say as we dont really know what you have game wise, but anything Unreal Engin 4 or 5 can be modded to VR. how well is another matter.

I am total disagreement on some of the stuff above. Had my Quest 3 (Bought a second for the family) for 6 weeks now. Non stop play Golf +, Walkabout Mini Golf, Real VR Fishing (The Most), Miracle Pool and Beat Saber (Modded)

I have dabbled a bit on the PCVR side, Racing games, No Mans Land, Star Wars, F1, Subnautica and so on, but they are just the same games I have spent the last 30 year's playing on my PC.

There are many decent games available, my advice is to play what you really really like, mine are my hobbies, love to golf and fish in real life as well as play poole and who doesn't like to listen to music.

Don't miss out on some choices, plenty of demo's out there and trials to try as well.

Is the fishing good? I saw they finally released it on Steam with 4 DLC locations...

ah yes add Starwars Squadrons as well its a very under rated VR game that ran terribly when it was released, but now we have some decent GPU grunt to throw at it the experience is vastly improved imho. Personally I don't see how someone can look at Squadrons as just another SW game there is nothing quite like it, NMS I sort of see where you are coming from.

I think what it comes down to is are you someone who wants to be fully immersed in something that feels real or is it the alternative gameplay that interests you. Are you naturally a Minecraft, Candy Crush, Tetris person or did Crysis tick all the boxes? That will possibly steer you towards titles that will gel but yeah stick to what you enjoy and try out a couple of others to see if they work as well.

Real VR Fishing on meta has over 7k reviews generally very possitive. for a title to get that amount of attention of the store to me says a lot!

i picked it up recently spent a small amout of time in it. its very chill and quit nicely done from what i see. vey good for just chulling with people.
i do need to spend some more time exploring it though.
i wanted to pick up some of the Japan DLCs for there scenic views

might i enqire which bits? you can PM me if you prefer. more my own curiosity.
This bit - Personally I'd avoid Meta store games unless you want to play them with your kids.

Basically ruiling at the whole meta store, all the games on it which apparently are only good for kids

The fishing is superb. I play it every day, also great for playting with friends, multiplayer works amazingly well and simple.

Buy it on the Meta store, teh version is well ahead and looks superb already. Avoid the Steam version for now unless you cannot

It's very well planned out. Start in normal mode with beginner rods. You can catch 90% of the fish. When you do that and get good you move to Expert mode where you catch the Epic fish. When you have done that you can catch the Unique fish at any skill level. This leads to real fishing progression. Unique fish were introduced in the USA DLC.

The best Usa and Japan DLC are very worth it, the europe one currently not so much but next week we have Europe Part 2 DLC coming.

Do the tutorials they give you £4k. Save up for the Class A rods and reels don't bother with class B. The better rods and reels help catching the bigger fish.

Class A baits are more attractive to fish than class C, again I try to use Class A. Buy the Class A lures, no point buying the B or C.

You can float or lure fish, both catch the fish but some fish prefer lures and some prefer live bait. The fish map in games tells you their prefered bait.

Each Map has it's own level 1/20. As you level up at 5,10, 15 and 20 you get more fish and much bigger ones.

You have 2 Aquariums, one Freshwater and 1 Salt Water, both hold up to 50 fish each even the sharks.

You can buy ornaments and landscapes for your tanks and furtniture for the Saltwater Aquarium lodge.

You can buy clothing for your avatar as well and new boats for both Freshwater and Saltwater fishing

There are monthly events as well with special fish and objectives

The game is really great and as a coarse fisherman really scratches the winter itch to fish

Games that I've spent the most time in:

I Expect You to Die series
Half Life Alyx
Talos Principle VR
Fallout 4 VR
Elder Scrolls Skyrim VR
Keep Talking and nobody Explodes - Co-op game that requires at least 2 people. 1 wears the headset and the other had the bomb disarming instructions.
No Man's Sky
Walkabout Mini Golf
Moss & Moss 2
Warplanes WW1
Warplanes Battles of Pacific
Max Mustard
Power Wash Simulator VR
Max Mustard
Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades
Asgard's Wrath II
In Death Unchained

Several of these are both PVCR and Quest native, I have a mixture of them. For PCVR I use Virtual Desktop anmd for Quest native games, Quest Games Optimizer. Allows the games to look better and run better at the same time. Requires some fiddling.

I'd add The Light Brigade to that list of great games. I've played a lot of that. It has the best two handed gun handling in VR that I've tried.
