where to start ?

right as some of you might know from my post i like to learn new stuff now i want to learn programming.

obviously there isnt one answer to this as i assume theres is different programming languages ?? so where can i find out what languages and where to start ? what will benefit me the most . uses and things ?

after reading i fancy looking further into application programming maybe web ??

Figure out what kind of programming you want to do first. If Web, I recommend PHP or Ruby.

well i have had a crazy idea of learning the language and how to do it and try to write a simple program for a computer that will control my fish tank and read mesurements from probes etc. i know this is well beyond my skill level but maybe build a simple program and then in a few years improve improve improve. so i need to no where to start reading ???

Look at the Arduino. I built a system using a Java backend that interacted with heart rate monitors etc using the Arduino platform. 'Easily' be used to do what you're saying.
