Where to stay near-ish to Gretna for a layover

We're travelling from Bristol to Inverness in October to do the NC500 and we need (want!) to stay overnight there and back to split the journey up. Where we stay doesn't really matter which makes the decision even harder!

- Would preferably want to stay just over the Scottish border, just cos of the thematic vibe
- Can be in a hotel, pod, or camping, but needs to be dog friendly
- Not that fussed about the exact hotel (we can find that), it's more about somewhere interesting with a food pub/food options
- Not too much of a detour off the M6 otherwise the layover becomes redundant

Any suggestions?

Just find a hotel in Gretna , it’s just a few minutes off the M6

Or there’s some premier inns just off the M6 in Carlisle

How far would you be prepared to go from gretna? The powfoot hotel is pretty nice. Other than that, in Gretna ive stayed at the Smiths hotel and Gretna Hall. Very reasonable for the money. I have a customer in Annan, so i stay there regularly. Ive stayed in Carlisle aswell, but just Premier inn.

Do not stay in Premier Inn Carlisle M6 Jct44 Hotel unless its like 3p a night because it is not a pleasant place. Go up to Gretna or a bit into Carlisle for a better sleep, Premier Inn Carlisle Central is 200 times better.

Nothing says the start of a holiday like a motorway Premier Inn. Think you guys have got the wrong end of the stick, or need to up your benchmarks.

Nothing is tied to Gretna, just that's roughly the halfway point. Can literally be within an hour of there, bar the detour point.

Central is about 5mins down the road isn’t it?

I agree, we stayed in Carlise last year. I pulled up at the first premier inn thinking it was ours it looked like a prison complex, once I got in the carpark and check the postcode I breathed a sigh of relief that our premier inn was a bit further down the road
