Where's all the good space games?

Well, an FPS set in space isn't really the same thing. By that measure Halo would be a 'space game'.

Of course, the mother of all modern space games is Orbiter ;)

I'm not sure if darkstar is the game I'm thinking of (but the reference to free lancer means it might be) but it was brutal.

from what i remember you started in a ship in space, and a lot of people seem to want you dead.

however at no point in your life do you remember attending the "how to escape ta 3 on one space dogfight with what seems to be a pea shooter strapped to the hull of your spacecraft with masking tape" course or the "how to pilot your new barley legal space fighter" course.


I think it took an obscene number of tries to just figure out wtf was "go forward" without someone ramming a rail gun up your badly armoured tailpipe.

I've only spent around 3 hours on it so can't really comment but it appears quite a solid little title.
 
Darkstar One isn't that hard apart from a couple of levels. I completed it.

Dogfighting is a bit flawed in that you need to be extremely patient, often you can be circling and opponent for minutes on end desperately trying to pull them round to get a shot in, while they are doing the same to you.
 
I've been playing X3:TC a lot recently, looking forward to rebirth. There's really no other games around that aren't ancient which is a shame :(

EVE is awesome if you have the time, I tried to get back into it for the recent patch but I'm all played out...
 
I'm currently playing Freespace 2, fully modded with all the graphical bells and whistles.


I'm also playing X3: Terran Conflict.
 
Might not be exactly what you're looking for but Startopia is awesome. You manage a space station which has many alien visitors. The campaign starts quite simple but as you go on the gameplay concepts become very complex as you manage the needs of your visitors, produce goods for trade with passing ships. Combat is not great but I find it better to play a skirmish game on my own to expand around the whole station. Its a gem of a game, lots of detail and things you have to work out for yourself.
