So, after having hanging problems on my new setup of about 3 weeks old, i've reinstalled vista, solved the hangs etc, but now i sem to have lost my 80gb IDE drive (My backups), i have this and my DVD drive on the same cable, dvd is showing up but hard drive isn't.

edit: does the drive show up on boot/in the bios?

Check all connectors are in properly (mobo end too)
Check jumpers on both drives
Try disconnecting the DVD drive
Try the drive conneced to another IDE port, preferably by itself
Try the drive in another machine

Failing the above it's probably time to buy a new drive and make new backups

I've just changed the IDE cable and still no joy, i hope to god i aven't lost this data as it has 2 years worth of photos of my child on it.

It's a matter of it was working a couple of hours ago, then after reinstalling vista 64 it's gone, that simple so i really can't see it being a hardware fault, that said, it isn't showing in BIOS either. Will try a couple more options though.

Do you have Vista installed on another HDD and is that an IDE drive or SATA?

I can perhaps understand it disappearing without certain chipset drivers, but it should be seen by bios regardless of OS. Cant see Vista resetting your BIOS.

can you confirm that it is there in the bios

if it is then it could b easy to get it bk but if its not then, it could be anything

its amazing how things can stop working without you going into the case, you unplug re plug in again and there you go it works lol

There are companies that can recover data even if the drive is completely dead, but I don't know what they would charge. Can't imagine it being cheap, but if you value the data enough...

If it's just a configuration issue and you get the drive working again the very first thing you should do is make backups. Sadly this is something people usually don't think about until it's too late :( (and yes, that does include me )

well ifound the drive, but I think things are more serious. I think my new ASIs p5q pro is dodgy. All manner of things are happening now.

When I reboot, the monitor doesn't come out of standby, then when it does it says to insert boot disk etc even with new install of vista.

My gfx card and inside of of feel hot to touch even with 2x12cm fans plus 3 more fans.

I m currently reinstalling vista yet again and posting from iPhone. To be honest, I'm suprised I haven't thrown the piece of crap out the window yet. I've never had so much trouble with any of I've built, and I've built a few.

hmm, guess what, monitor now gone off whilst installing vista, won't come out of standby.
