Well apart from Drunkenmaster was talking about the benchmarks showing the PowerVR chip rendering 50% raw more pixels and still coming out faster. Actually even at the same resolution NVidia do have to render 50%* more pixels. PowerVR are a tile based deferred rendering Architecture which means they do not render any pixels the human eye cannot see. NVidia on the other hand render almost all the pixels although to be fair they do remove some. But still Nvida have to use brute force and render everything even if it’s useless.“I see in your haste to trash anything and everything Nvidia, you missed that the last benchmarks I posted were all offscreen tests, now I would hope you know what that means. As you seem to have some fundamental comprehension issues, I'll spell it out, that means they are all rendering at the exact same resolution, so no 50% penalty at all.”
That is why PowerVR can run at a slower clock speed, produce less heat and still match NVidia in speed. It’s not the processor node it’s the efficiency of the chip. That is why PowerVR are twice as good as NVidia at performance per watt.
*Please note 50% is not accrete as the amount changes based on the scene being rendered. If a scene has an average overdraw of 3 then NVidia have to render over 200% more pixels at the same resolution to produce the same end result. In games the amount jumps up and down based on the scene. It can be as low as 10% or over 500%.
The A8X is over 100% better performances per watt. How is that not smashing the K1? You seem to have missed the A8X is beating the K1 while running at slower speeds and lower heat output. Once we factor in Metal A8X is around 40%+ faster, running at over double the performance per watt, no heat problems, less power drain I don’t see how you can call the K1 anywhere near good.“It must have pained you that the A8X didn't smash the K1 as you so fervently hoped and wished.”
Look at all the people complaining how hot the K1 is getting to hold. K1 is only doing as well in speed due to the massive power draw and massive heat output.
The way I see it as a gamer is I can choose Tegra K1 which gets hot in the hand, cannot run some of the top games and the top games it runs look much worse graphically with the best graphics removed from the game.
Or I can go for a PowerVR GPU which is much cooler in the hand, can run the top games without a problem and the games it runs are massively better graphically.
Why would I pick the Tegra k1 over PowerVR? What advantage does Tegra K1 have? I see lots of disadvantage but no advantages of K1. When we come down to it the only thing that matters are performance per watt, apps and games and in those areas Tegra K1 is massively behind.
