which 1155 cpu for my Htpc for 4k playback

Your question is vague but I'm assuming you're thinking of playing back UHD video encoded as HEVC, right?

If so you're going to need either one hell of a beefy CPU (overclocked Core i7 probably) or a GPU with HEVC hardware decoding, only one of which exists right now: the GTX 960.

If your playback software is able to use GPU decoding (e.g. via LAV Filters) then your CPU is largely irrelevant. My HTPC has a Sandy Bridge Celeron - it doesn't need anything more powerful when the GPU is doing the decoding.

Of course, I'd also need an upgrade for UHD/HEVC...

I thought recent iGPUs were capable?

Some have hybrid HEVC decoding. Only one GPU has full HEVC decoding for both 8-bit and 10-bit: nVidia GTX 960.

There is another issue though: the fact that UHD standards aren't fully defined yet. If 100/120 fps video makes it into the standard then existing hardware may not be compatible anyway. It seems too early to jump on the bandwagon when not much is set in stone.

ARM has HVEC support for its latest GPUS:

So its quite possible in the next few months there will be media boxes which support playback at the fraction of a cost of a dedicated PC or even dedicated decoding cards for PC.

Also remember Broadwell and Skylake will be out in the next few months so it might be worth looking if there are improvements to 4K media playback with these too.

Is 960 plenty powerful enough though to deal with this resolution, with lav filters as well?

Unfortunately I have all ready bought all my Htpc parts apart from the cpu. Am thinking of going celeron and a 960 :)
