Just a quick note, that sammy doesn't have a higher vertical res than a 16:20 24" monitor, it's about 50 pixels shorter. However, it has more pixels overall (around 50000).

Yeah obviously the VGA standards have been around for donkey's years, I guess 1080p came about as they wanted a 16:9 rather than a 16:10 (WUXGA) ratio.

Many things you probably didn't want to know about aspect ratios...

For PC work I consider 16:10 to be about as short screen as I want to go. As for 16:9, it's the adopted format for HD TV and will remain so until some marketing department decides otherwise. It appears 16:9 was chosen as all other popular ratios can be black bared to fit within its bounds, but please note that at conception no popular ratio would fit within its bounds without black bars.

Thanks for the replies - I'm really after more vertical space than my current 19" dispaly at 1280x1024.

The 23" and 24" 16:9 only give 1080, near enough the same as a 22" monitor at 1680 x 1050.

Basically its the Hyundai N240Wd vs Samsung SM-2443BW vs Dell TrueColour E248WFP however the Dell is really beyond the budget
