I'm after a cheap 24" monitor for an old PC I'm refurb'ing. It's for the in-laws and I'd like to get one with integral speakers to keep their desk uncluttered.

There seem to be a lot of 3yr old monitors that were £200 back then but are now £150 new.

I know it's all going to be about compromises. at that price point, and I know nothing abvout the various technologies.

What about the BenQ G2450HM 24" Widescreen LED Monitor? As good a choice as any?

Hi there,

The BenQ would work fine, though I would personally go with this Iiyama as it is a bit cheaper, is a solid TN panel monitor and also has built-in speakers.

That said, if you would prefer better image quality (better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles) at the expense of a bit of responsiveness then you may want to consider a 23in 1080p IPS panel monitor like the AOC i2352vh, which also has built-in speakers.

Thanks a lot Cmndr Andi.

Wider viewing angles are quite important.

It's going to be a family computer used for looking at photos together, internet, and occassional accounts.

Yes, that Iiyama IPS monitor also looks to be a nice one, though I can't seem to find as many reviews for it as the AOC.

Here is a review in polish - it gets a good write up (especially what he says about the lack of apparant ghosting in games).

If you post 11 more times on these forums you should qualify for free delivery on all future OCUK orders to mainland UK. So I would personally do this and order the Iiyama X2377HDS off OCUK (with free next-day delivery). In the unlikely event that you don't like it then OCUK operate a 14 day no-questions-asked returns policy (which is 7 days better than what they are legally required to do).

The monitors are very close in performance, personally I'd go for the Iiyama simply because I still see AOC as a bit of a budget brand while I see Iiyama as an A-brand. If that's actually correct or not.. no idea, AOC might have joined the A ranks.. not sure.

Can't give you a direct link as the page also shows the price which would be in conflict with the forum rules but below is the table. It is mainly a hardware review site so I guess a link to the front page is allowed? If not some mod can edit out the following link. uk.hardware.info

Thanks Axeia. I'm like you - I have only read good things about Iiyama, and know nothing about AOC.

Pretty certain I'm going for the Iiyama from here. (Hence all the posts)

The iiyama does look nice and as Axeia says - Iiyama are a well known monitor brand that have been making good quality monitors for literally decades - so you should be in safe hands with one of their monitors.

Also, if you ever have any problems with it - it does come with 3 years of warranty, just give OCUK a shout if you have any problems with it.

Thanks a lot for all your help Andi.

Unfortunately I've cocked up. I'm horribly rash and I ordered the Iiyama from another site before I realised it was available from OC. As soon as I realised, I cancelled (approx 20 mins later) but they've just replied to say it's "already dispatched".

A bit of a shame, as I wanted to reward OC for providing the forum where I could get good help.

Anyway, the other company seems to have cocked up the order/cancellation saga, and as a result I appear to be getting sent monitor and a £10 hdmi cable next day del for £131.

Ah well - at least you have one on its way.

In your OP you mentioned you will be using the monitor with an older PC. May I ask what video outputs it has? And if it uses a graphics card, may I ask which model?

Ah, here it comes - the bit where my computer knowledge or lack thereof comes back to bite me.

It's an old Dell Dimension 5100 P4 3.2ghz into which at some juncture I stuck a cheap 512MB Palit 8400 GS PCI-E(x16). It's running a Linux distro which appears to work fine with the VGA monitor I currently have it hooked up to. What's the betting the linux drivers haven't quite got to HDMI just yet?

Ah yes, that card has VGA, DVI and HDMI - so a perfect match with the video inputs of the monitor.

Of these three, only HDMI can also carry audio - though if your OS doesn't work great with HDMI then you may want to discount this connection. Not getting audio through the HDMI shouldn't be a problem though - since the monitor has a separate 3.5mm stereo audio-in connection which you can connect to the audio-out of your motherboard/sound card.

As for the video - does your linux distro work OK with DVI? This will offer the same image quality as HDMI, but no audio alongside it (though as I mentioned above, you can get round this by using the separate audio-in connection).

If it doesn't support DVI, then VGA will work fine - though don't expect the image to be quite as sharp - since VGA is analogue while DVI/HDMI are digital.

He was just kidding (I hope). NVIDIA's linux drivers are hardly if anything behind on the Windows ones, they're doing a great job imo.

The opensource drivers should support everything but video acceleration (and have worse performance) afaik.

Yea, I'm hoping so too - I mean I recently used ubuntu on a NAS system and that worked without issue via HDMI to a TV (it even did sound over HDMI).

Though if he is using a weird distro then maybe it isn't so simple.

Heya, the machine's for the in-laws, and they don't use Linux, and I need to set it up as robustly as possible. I decided on Mint Ubuntu, which I think will be fine. I expect picture to work but sound's a minor concern. Still, I'l just have to wait and see.

Well, a brief update - the montior came, it's pefect. Small patch of bleed (?) on one side of screen but not really noticable.

HDMI sound doesn't work! So having to use audio-out which is fine. (Problem with the graphics card and linux, rather than the monitor, of course)
