Which 4080 to go for?

Hi all,

I'd like to upgrade my 3080 to a 4080. I don't want to do any tinkering or OC - just want to plug in and enjoy!

However, I'm not sure a) which one I can go with with my motherboard (ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING) and b) whether I can fit one in my case or if I need to get new cooling? I believe I have a Fractal Design Meshify C Case.

Advice would be welcome!

With thanks,

James

I think you'll find that the only card which is short enough (based on the specs on Fractal's website) is the FE.
Its 335mm if you don't fit a front fan case, I had this case and could fit a 337 card in it (tolerance's may be different for others cases). Opens up the options a bit.

As above, a 9700K is going to be a substantial bottleneck for a 4080

If you're only going to play legacy games at higher framerates, the bottleneck will still kick in above 100fps and newer stuff will desperately need the extra cores and threads to get to and maintain a stable 60.

But if you are happy to accept not seeing a 4080 used to its full potential, I'd just stick to the FE from Nvidia.

The gains to be had from a 3rd party card are minimal as they're already running very near their limits at stock.

This. These cards are huge. I went with the smallest I could find which was the FE.

I ended up needing to buy a different power adapter as well because the adaptor in the box was too big to fit comfortably in my P400a case.

Also checkout the Asus Pro Art as they have small dimensions too.
