After the nightmare I had with the 280GTX I decided to ask the good people of OC if I could send it back as I could not afford to buy a new PSU just to run it................THANK YOU OC

Anyway I have decided to go for a 4870 as I know my PSU can run them, but which one should I get.

I had the Powercolor before and it went back because of the fan making a grinding sound when idle.

Could someone recommend any of the others from personnel experiance.

Cheers :)

All the stock ones are the same. Just different badges on them. The Powercolour one you had was the PCS which is known to have fan grinding issues due to a faulty batch or something.

I have the std Powercolour 4870: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

It works fine.

All stock 4870 appear to have a 2-3 sec period where the fan spins up to 100% on bios post then in windows after which it goes back to normal speeds. This is a design choice by ATI to double check the fan is working as the 4870 does get very hot.

I like the Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 "Golden Sample

But am concerned as its had no user reviews. Apart from gibbos

Im currently wondering wether to rma my standard one and the Vortex I ordered with it as theyre both unused and come to the same price as the goden sample, very tempted tho just in two minds ><

Cant find any reviews comparing the noise to a standard and to a vortex :(

Which 4870

Most 4870s are built according to the reference design with the distinguishing factors being warranty, after sales support and bundled software. There are a few which have custom cooling (e.g. the Golden Sample one) but it's not worth the money in my opinion; I got the cheapest one (Gainward when I bought), put on a Accelero S1 heatsink with a 120mm fan and overclocked past the level of the pre-overclocked cards.

I take it Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 VGA Cooler will fit the 4870?

edit: never mind wrong one
