Which 4GB GTX680?

Hi all,

Looking to get myself a 4GB GTX680 to replace the existing GTX260 I have.

Have been looking at the Palit Jetstream card but would appreciate any other suggestions.

The reason for choosing the 4GB version is for multiscreen+high settings+mods etc in games as I'm sure somebody will ask.

Are you going tri-SLI? If not, save your money. You'll only be able to utilise the extra VRAM in Skyrim IF you use a very large amount of unofficial mods.

I'm not intending to go tri-SLI

At present I can't say how many mods I would run on Skyrim as it is waiting on this new purchase. I have played around on my younger brothers machine and he has a long list (can't remember his spec off top of my head).

I am also keen to stick with the card for quite some time as I tend to build a machine to run for 4+ years.

The extra VRAM may help extend the life of the card though of course there is the issue of core count and clock speeds.

I was tempted to wait for the next batch of Kepler cards but then of course there will be the next iteration of chipset so I will wait forever.

Honestly go with s 2GB card and save the extra money. I upgraded from a GTX260 also to a GTX680 and the difference is staggering.

Sounds fair enough - I haven't kept up with the who's who in the GPU market and whether I should stear away from certain brands (warranty wise etc).

There are so many to choose from do you guys have any particularly good ones to suggest?

Bit of an open question I know but I appreciate your feedback.

With only a single card - you will run out of GPU grunt before you run out of memory - especially multi-screen.

I don't feel limited by 2GB/card at 5840x1080

Only when you crank up the AA past 4x, for the most part.

Certainly in quite a few games... "only" a gtx690 or 2x 670s isn't enough for 120fps without AA... let alone with!!

I was thinking about getting another 690... but now my focus has shifted back to cars again, all my money's being plowed in to those lol

I'd say get yourself a 2Gb 670. Almost the same performance as the 680 but for much less. Otherwise you could look at getting 2 7950's, since two of them cost as much as a single 4Gb 680 but would obviously offer much more performance. The recent price cuts on AMD cards swayed me :) But if you want to stick with Nvidia, a 670 is the card to go for imo.

Please don't ever recommend multi-card ATi to anyone... it's not fair to subject them to it.

1 card vs 1 card = fair enough

sli is the only way for multi-card setups... benchmarks are irrelevant to user experience.

Is that just a personal experience with CFX? Because most people with 7950 CF seem to say it is great.

i sold my second 6950 because i got fed up with microstutter, flickering in games and waiting for them to be patched for cf, and heat, though to be fair it was mostly the heat issue and that was more down to my motherboard spacing!

Personal experience & there are well known issues plastered across this forum and many others.

Some people tell themselves they don't notice the micro-stutter... feel free to try and convince yourself of that... but it is present on every ATi multi-card system.

It's also present on every Nvidia multi-card system - but with the 6XX series, they have reduced the micro-stutter to a level barely above single card stutter... to a point I genuinely don't notice the difference anymore.

I would have a single 680 if I did!

Then there are all the multi-card driver issues ATi still have... they've got single cards working extremely well now & have improved multi-card quite a bit... but they have a long long way to go to catch up with Nvidia.

Nvidia cards are worth the premium.

Guys - are there any particular manufacturers I should avoid with regard to warranty?

When I last bought a card (years back) certain ones were best avoided as RMA processes were terrible - are they all pretty much the same now?
