Which 4gb PC8500 Memory

HI all I’ve recently bought the following bits to upgrade my ageing computer as I only have one life and I don’t want to spend it waiting for the mouse to move.

Zotac Geforce 9800gt Video Card
Core 2 quad Q8300 Processor
Gigabyte P43-ES3G Motherboard
Windows 7 Ultimate

The PC will have a dual role as a HTPC and games machine. Having not built a computer for 4/5 years I’m completely out the loop. I’m currently looking for some (DDR2 PC8500) 4gb memory (2x2gb paired) and my initial research have highlighted OCZ Platinum’s 8500 as a contender. Will this memory meet my HTPC/ Games machine requirements? Can anyone recommend memory which would meet my needs?

I’m looking to spend around the £90 mark, although cheaper if I can get away with it.

Thanks in advance for all your help

Ps Is 2 x 2gb match pair better than 1 x 4gb memory performance wise?

Another vote for the Kingston here. Do not be put off by the low price as it's excellent stuff. I have a kit in my second pc.

There is a advantage of using 2x2Gb sticks over 4x1Gb sticks. 2 sticks put's less strain on the NB and may lead to higher clocks with less voltage. Normally with 4 sticks you have to increase NB voltage to aid stability.

You did mean 4x1Gb and not 1x4Gb. Running one stick would be a performance decrease due to it only running in single channel.

Thanks Temi and Pasty for the link and the info. It looks like good memory so I’ll probably end up getting it. Yes I did mean 4x1gb so thanks very much. I was offered 4 x 1gb but didn’t really want to use up all my slots, but wondered if it was worth it performance wise.

Thanks again.

The Kingston would be a good choice. Only need PC8500 if your overclocking past about 3.6GHz otherwise PC6400 will do. As there is only a £2 of course go for the PC8500 though ;)

I bit the bullet and ordered a pair yesterday. I was put off by the voltage requirements, but after searching on ebay, I can't find much better (even second hand).

OCUK have the best deal atm for 4gb ddr2 at these speeds.

I'm trusting Temi D's opinion and shall be cursing if they explode. :)

They work fine @ rated speeds, but had to slightly underclock them (20 mhz) in order to get the CPU stable at 3.5+ghz.

Could be the board though, as it's only rated for 800mhz ram and the PWM hits 55 degrees full load OCed.

I'm happy.

I got mine yesterday and got 5-5-5-15 @ 1024Mhz @ 2.0v (CPU @3.2 Ghz for now) straight out of the box - which is looking good for a decent overclock. I'm gonna have to have a play around to get the best out of them but with 2.3v rated on the modules I have a little headroom yet if needed.

Looking at the reviews they can keep up with modules with £100+ price tags.
All in all, great value DDR2 for folk wanting to overclock on the cheap.:D

Grab a bargain while OcUK have them on offer.;)
