Which 6400 DDR2 does 800mhz by default

I have read most memory defaults to 5,5,5,15 instead of the specced 4,4,4,12 it is capable of (micron) and some memory defaults to 667mhz instead of the specced 800mhz for safety reasons (geil).

Can anyone tell me of any 6400 DDR2 that has the SPD programmed to run at 800mhz 5,5,5,15 or 800mhz 4,4,4,12. My motherboard does not have any ram timing adjustment but it does support DDR2 6400 and I need to get new ram. But obviously only whatever is programmed into the SPD will run. I have been recommended the Crucial Ballistix 6400C4 2gig kit as being compatible. Just wondering if this is the same micron stuff as the Team Extreme 6400.

Regarding the benefits of DDR2 6400 - as the PC is not overclockable at the moment and the cpu is running at 266mhz would there be any benefit to running the memory out of synch at 400mhz, besides the advantage the video card might have from reading from faster memory directly ? It seems like wasted bandwidth and I know some people say not running at 1:1 and using a divider (which would be the case here as the cpu would automatically use one to keep at 266mhz) is always a negative although I never found in the past.

You would be wasting your money buying any memory for your Dell PC.

You just can't overclock there motherboards, If you can set the memory to 400Mhz then you would see very little difference anyway.

I guessed that, but I need to get some memory as the stuff in it I have on loan from a friend. So may as well get DDR2 6400 800mhz ram since the board supports it.

So back to my original question - besides the Geil 6400 ultra stuff which runs at auto settings of 667mhz, does DDR2 6400 generally run at 800mhz using auto timings ? That's all I really want to know.

Regarding overclocking - there are 2 ways to overclock a dell mobo - using systool if it supports it, or use an Intel bios, tricky but can be done if you know who to talk to.

So I guess after 42 people looking at this no one knows if their DDR2 6400 is autodetected at 800mhz instead of 667mhz...sheesh.

None of them do. You'd be daft to want one that did. Your computer boots up at 1.8V because the standard maximum RAM speed (PC5300/667MHz/5-5-5-15) has been standardised at 1.8V. So properly programmed RAM will always boot up in your machine. Because this is enthusiast RAM (overclocking RAM) it is considered acceptable to make the user go into the BIOS and set the timings and FSB manually.

Look back about 6 months when GeIL made their PC6400 Ultra boot at 2.2V with 4-4-4-15 timings. The result was that many, many systems refused to boot and quite literally hundreds of users RMA'd their RAM or had to borrow 'cheap' sticks from friends to get their systems booted up.

That's whey they all boot up at 667MHz, 5-5-5-15, 1.8V. It's the safety standard.

Thanks dude. Good to know.
I will get whatever is the cheapest 667mhz or 533mhz then.

It's interesting though. The Crucial website recommends their 800mhz 6400 with a 2.2v as being compatible with the Dell 9200. I would have thought this would have booted at 800mhz then ? I have a funny feeling the Dell bios latches onto the spd timings and picks the maximum value to boot with.

My GeIL was nearly 800MHz at default, CPU-Z reported them at 736MHz, a small FSB tweak and I got them to 800 and a little beyond, they are at 832MHz at 4-4-4-12 and 2.1V.

Also it appears the Crucial stuff at least on Dell boards is also 800mhz by default. Jedec have a 6400 standard now I have been told but something like 5,5,5,18

only board i came across that sets exact timings
is the Intel badaxe2 it boots up my cellshock pc6400 at 4.4.4.12 1.85 volts

so mabaye you should have said motherboard because the intel
is the only motherboard that can do it, all my asus motherboards boot up
using safe timings of 5.5.5.15 using the same cellshock memory

If possible you really ought to get out of that Dell box. You've got a lot of top class components there that are just begging to be overclocked.

Get yourself a DS4 or one of the new nVidia mobos. Don't forget a new case as dell use non standard motherboard sizes.

Motherboard and case would cost less then £200. Trust me it'll be worth it for the extra performance you'll see. Getting out of my dell box was the best thing I ever did for my computer :)

Nope not going to. My last rig was an Abit IN9, dual 8800GTX's and quad core. So I know all about overclocking and top components. I kept buying newer and newer components for it though. Money pit. The Dell does everything my last rig did, a lot quieter then any aircooled system for same performance, and was very cheap. There is no way I could build the spec i have for what I paid. It also only runs a 375w psu which while very conseratively rated is surprisingly qualified to run an 8800GTX and fits one with about 3 inches to spare. The only minus is that Dell cases now take a standard atx psu so when a more power juice sucking gpu comes out I could upgrade to this with a simple psu change. A bad thing from my perspective :(

My mate has some geil ultra 6400 lying about so will borrow that and whack it in too see what the motherboard says. But for the most part I know it's a complete waste on my rig now over not being able to raise the CPU's fsb so standard 5300 will do the trick.
