well im torn now between the nikon 70-300mm vr afs or the tamron 70-300 usm one.

from what i can find on review sites there basicaly the same at the end of the day, just wondering if anyones got any opinions on them. as sames either way il go il probably be spending roughly the same amount of cash give or take £20, so would rather get the better for the difference.

will be used on my d5100 btw.

I'd recommend going into a shop and trying one on your camera first and seeing how good the results actually are with one. I made the mistake of getting a sigma 70-300 lens for my 5100 when I had it and it wasn't sharp at all at any focal lenth.

easier said than done seems no ones got the tamron 70-300 in anywhere near me that i can find. hence the asking.

i just pick up the Tamron SP 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD for my D5100
in tests it beats the nikkor lens in the same price bracket
got it for £315 new and you get a 5 year warranty

I got my Nikon 70-300 before there was any competition (AFAIK this tamron is the one only present comparable lens) and use it a lot hiking and backpacking as it is so light and versitle - it gets more use than my 70-200mm VR or 300mm f/4.0 + 1.4x TC.

If I somehow lost the 70-300 VR I would buy a replacement with no hesitation and wouldn't consider the Tamon. I have not seen any reliable evidence that it surpasses the Nikon and at best meets the resolution at certain settings. even if everything was even I would likely still get the Nikon for piece of mind, guaranteed reliability with the AF. The weakest point of the Nikon is at 300mm f/5.6, which is a key setting, but the Tamron is not better and typically worse. The Tamron does have better CA control, but this is not a biggy.

Well I owned both the Tamron and Nikon lens on my old D90 and while the Nikon is a superb lens I'd take the Tamron every day of the week.

It focuses faster and the VC on it is much better than the VR system on on the Nikon. Image quality wise there nothing in it however.
