hi all

with the 290 looking decent value but running hot & loud i'm considering jumping to 770/780, question is which one.

monitor will be a 24 in, yet to be purchased. I read elsewhere that a 780 is overkill for one monitor, opinions? Could go 770 and add a 2nd later.

Am ready to go with the purchase now, could wait if something exciting is round the corner.

I expect to go non reference with the cooler, and am willing to pay a few extra £ for a quiet design.

Well, a 4GB 770 will cost you £320 while a 780 is for a £390-400, see no reason why you shouldn't add 70-80 quid more and go for a 780. Personally got a MSI GE and there is next to no difference between the fans when you to go to 100% from 30%, so they are pretty damn quiet and the temps are good as well.

Edit: It's never really an overkill with an upgrade if the rest of your system is good, unless someone is buying a titan for a celeron with 256ram, then, yeah.......

is this urgent? you might wait for non reference 290.

or you can grab 280X Toxic, which is not far behind 780, but costs £270. (250 if you shop around)

For single monitor i would go for a 280x. With the spare cash you save you can add it to the monitor budget and go for a nicer screen with a better resolution ie go from 1080 to 1440.

Edit: or prob the best value for money thing in your price bracket, the 7990! you gotta have the PSU for it though!

thanks so far

going to order tomorrow, so any more advice on which 780 cooler?

edit: not desperately urgent but one of the other threads said jan for 290 non ref, and the most time i get for gaming will be december & xmas break so may as well go now.

I bought a PNY GTX780 XLR8 OC, is pretty good factory overclocked, and very quiet. (and still managed to get almost 1300 with barely any time spend on OC).
If you look around you can find them for around £370. Sold the 3 games, and cost me only £340.

But be aware. Is very big card. 5.5cm bigger than my full ATX motherboard.
