Beyond obvious specification differences it usually comes down to the cooler and the warranty/returns policy.

I have read recently about higher binned GPU's and some brands are more likly to get top parts than others or the type of memory used, but I'm not sure on the accuracy of it all.

Yes, do not go for something exotic. Well known brand with good warranty and smooth rma process is the most important. You can not go wrong either you choose evga, giga, msi, asus.
