Which 7th gen intel CPU for price perfomance ratio?

Second hand i5 (get a 'k' cpu if your motherboard supports it) .... new prices for the 7000 CPU's are a bit daft when placed next to either intel or AMD's more recent offerings. (like £165 odd for a dual core unlocked i3 or £350 for a 4 core 8 thread part with no bundled games vs a £525 for a much more capable 8c 16t part with a games/software bundle and that's before you look at the AMD options)

yeah I was considering a ryzen + mobo as it looked like a better price, which seemed crazy! Thanks for the replies, it's not just me thinking along these lines, just seems a complete waste of a motherboard...

Currently I have a 7700k/1080 system which is my gaming machine. I have the original motherboard for this, which has the nvme slot underneath. This is the reason for the second motherboard as I wanted a board with it on top due to throttling & an installed nvme pressing against the pcie ribbon cable (it's mitx). I actually have enough kit to make a complete second PC with a nvidia 970, excluding the cpu...

Only thing I considered which isn't mentioned above is trying to pick up a 'cheap' xeon for it... only real issue is it's not officially supported :(

sell the motherboard so its not wasted or build that second PC and sell that presuming you don't need the parts?

I did also consider this - it was to upgrade my partners machine. I'd like to keep the motherboard available as it's bespoke to my current case... (Corsair One) It will fit in a standard m-itx case, just irritating things like no built in video outputs (I was also looking to combine my unraid server) so the logic behind my question isn't all in this thread, if that makes sense!
