I currently own a Nexus 7 2012, and it is dog turd now. It is so slow it is completely unusable. I've tried wiping the cache, etc etc etc and there is no improvement.

I'm thinking its time to get a new tablet, what do people recommend in the 8-9" size? 7" is a little to small and the 10" Nexus my Dad has is to big and heavy.

I mostly watch youtube and okay a few games on it, check facebook and some web browsing.

I also have a synology box so it must be apple or android so I can connect to my media, also I would like expandable storage so I can load it up with films for my holiday in September.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for responding, i was doing my research last night and narrowed it down to the Nvidia shield and Sony Experia Z3 Compact tablet.

I think I am going to go for the Sony as I already have a PS4 and two controllers so it would be cheaper to buy the Z3 Tablet, I've also got loads of quality Ps4 games I would love to play in bed.

I don't recommend getting the shield tablet, It drains battery for fun and still drains even when plugged into USB while using it.

Is that with the original plug and cable? If it is you probably have a faulty battery

Well I bought it when it 1st came out the WiFi only version and the nvidia forums were full of people with the same issue.

If you can plug it into the wall it isn't too bad but over USB it drains battery while playing games.

I don't use it anymore as I have a note 4 and rate it way higher then the shield tablet.

You might want to check out a Hudl 2 or a LG Pad 8.3 Pad as they both have expandable storage. Both can be bought (a bit hard for the LG Pad as it seems to be vanishing from stock) at good prices and the LG can be flashed with an up to date LP ROM.

I have both the above tablets and their performance and screen quality etc are great.

My Nexus 7 is also a turd, in terms of consistent performance, but I only use it as a Bluetooth audio player now for my audio books when in bed.

I had a Hudl2 for around 6 months, they are good for the money.

I recently bought a Z3 Compact Tablet to replace it with which is much better. It's thinner, lighter and faster with a better battery (12-13hrs screen on time compared to around 5.5-6hrs on the Hudl2 with my usage), water and dust proof etc.. Currently on 5.0.2, but Sony are updating Z3's to 5.1 in July.

The Z3 32gb cost me twice as much as the Hudl 2 though.

I had the same dilemma. Every tablet I looked at seemed to have its flaws.

I recently went from a Nexus 7 2012 to the 2013 version. It was an impulse decision as like many others, my 2012 version was sluggish and became frustrating to use. Argos had 80 quid off the 32gb version recently so I thought what the hell. (Think I paid £120)

The difference is night and day. If you can get one at the right money, don`t rule out the 2013 Nexus. Its in a different league to the older version, battery life is great plus full HD screen goodness. I know there is no expandable storage, but there is always USB OTG.

Samsung Tab A 9.7 Not the most powerful tablet but seems you don't anything to amazing on the performance front. But at £230 it seems quite good value for a mid range tablet.

I'm happy with my Samsung tab pro 8.4 which was £140 from John Lewis, not quite as good as my kids tab s but waaaaaay better than my old 1st gen nexus 7.

Lenovo S8? Its about £100 now and does a good job for browsing/facebook. Battery life is acceptable for me but usage is not that heavy

I not had any issues with the hardware on my Nvidia shield. Yes when gaming it barely charges (especially if you dont use a proper charger seeing as usb ports are about 500ma where as the tablet can take a 2A charge) but thats because it has a powerful and power hungry chip which is why it is so good at gaming. But when I don't game I get 7hrs SOT on max brightness and it barely discharges when its just laying around.

5.1 has its bugs of course but thats a lollipop issue. The only downside I find is that there isn't much in the way of tablet features that take advantage of the bigger screen but thats because it has stock lollipop.

I think this is a case of what features you want at what price. There is no best tablet, just whats best for you.

In the end I got the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact tablet, mainly for remote play so I can play my ps4 games in bed. I'm going to order the adapter today.

It is an excellent device compared to my Nexus 7, its so quick and the extra inch is very nice on the screen.

I cannot wait to play on remote play!! At least it saves me having to buy a vita.
