I'm building a new comp and i can't afford to upgrade fairly often, so i'm trying to make it as future proof as possible...

My budget only is only(lol) allowing me a 8800 gts, but what i need help deciding is whether the 640mb version is worth it over the 320?. I gather that the 640 is probably the safer bet for most people, but the thing is my monitor is pretty small and i only run games at 1024*768(which doesn't bother me at all tbh).

So would the 640 be a waste of money or a good investment?

Thanks ;)

With that size monitor, the 320mb version will do just fine.

From the reviews I've seen, the 320mb only starts struggling at much higher resolutions in most games.

What is your current card?

I ask because at 1024*768 there might not be a big difference as you are most likely not GPU limited.

It's been said that, due to depreciation, you actually save money by upgrading frequently rather than once every 2 years or so. That is providing that you sell on your stuff while it's still relatively new - before the next gen stuff comes out.

For instance, had I sold my 6800GT just before the 7000 series came out, I could probably have got almost as much for it second hand as I paid for it new (thank the bay for that - crazy prices).

Now as a 2+ year old card, I can only get about £60 for it. The people who continually sell off their last gen stuff don't seem to spend an awful lot on upgrades.

Also at a guess I'd venture that the low end models in any series don't depreciate as much as the high-end models. But that may not be true :p

my current card is a radeon 9600. nuff said :p .

I know *at the moment* games do not feel the full force of 320mb of video ram at 1024*768, but my concern was whether this would change in the near future, with the introduction of dx10 games n all.

It's also been said that you shouldn't buy the current 8800s for their DX10 performance, since DX10 games aren't out yet, and when they are there will be better cards at the same price point.

yeah but thats pretty much always the case... there is always a better card or a price cut or something just round the corner. I'd wait for DX10 but my radeon 9600 is kinda starting to show its age! And these 8800 series cards are no slouches... crysis looks amazing and i'm sure all the footage i've seen hasnt been running off of nvidia G12000 prototypes. IF i have to tone down the detail in future DX10 games so it *only* looks as good as crysis, then so be it!

Well are you planning on upgrading your monitor? The general consensus is that the 320mb card is fine at anything up to 16x12. If you're confident that you'll only be gaming at 1024x768, then it's not really a tough decision :)

I would say the 320 if you stick at 1024x768. However, if you plan to go out and get a 20"+ monitor then the 640 would be the recommendation! :)

Agreed, i game at 1280x1024 here and my 320mb GTS cuts through everything in its wake at that, will easily handle 1024x768, as said the 320mb GTS's are fine right up to 16x12, even faster than the 640mb versions (if you get on overclocked one), and also as said don't worry about Dx10 games, FoxEye's previous post got it spot on. :)

I bought my GTS for the now, the performance im getting now, i never thought about Dx10 games at all as its a waste of time if they aint here yet, and when they are you can bet your bottom dollar that every 8800 series owner will be upgrading to the cards that are out then to play those games, the GTS is an absolutely awesome card in everyway, the price is unbeatable, buy one and enjoy. :D

Yeah, forget about the DX10 performance as a 8800GTS is also a very good card for current games.

It will allow you to maximise IQ with AA and AF and every IQ option enabled and it will still be faster than a Radeon 9600
