Which 8800 Ultra ?

Are the higher clock ultras worth the premium considering you are guaranteed the speed increase which you may not get with the above.

It's a case of whether the extra cash is worth an extra ~4fps.

I see what you are saying but the picture changes a lot when you overclock those ultras.

This is 1 example is from tweaktown and shows how the xfx xxx takes the lead in the coh bench. I can't see a regular gtx overclocking to xfx xxx ultra speeds.

Then you've answered your own question ;)

this guy has 2 8800gtx's and 2 8800's and test's them in SLI, lets say the ultra's
get to around 25/30 fps in intense situations and the gtx's get around 14/17 fps in intense situations, most of the time its double the performance over the gtx's, but its hard to say when its not in sli.

Res he plays at is 2560x1600 :O:O:O

but at frame rates over 100fps, will you honestly notice the difference when your playing a game like company of heroes?

True but what is important is high average framerate and high low framerate. There is nothing worse then having the framerate jump around the place. The XXX ultra at 675 core might help here.

nice find..watching it now...it's the xfx xxx version of the ultra he is testing which is also a possibilty for me.

That picture would also change a lot with an overclocked 8800gtx...

An overclocked 8800gtx would be right in the middle of them scores between the reference ultra and overclocked ultra.....

so at 1920x1200 you would be looking at about an extra 4fps between an overclocked ultra and overclocked gtx..

So you reckoin an OC GTX at say 650/2000 which is what I had before would be very competitivie to an OC ULTRA at 675/2250 ?

Doesn't the ultra run cooler also ?

yes they run cooler, use less power but not a lot, something like 3 watts less which is nothing major, they also have more bandwidth.

but untill we see some solid performance in a game like bioshock or crysis my money isnt budging.

3. Buy a 2900xt 512 *save even more cash*, and pray drivers get better or get another later for Crossfire when the P35 support improves.

Id do this, the 2900 is a cracking card that can only get better, its already faster than the GTS in some, on par in others, and in some cases its even faster than the GTX, and its only had 1x set of drivers!!!.

I thought the 2900xt was pants when aa is enabled ?

Same here, but apprently it aint, all that i said above is with AA enabled, all reviews said there was an AA problem though as the 2900 takes a huge hit when enabled, so can you imagine how much better its going to be once they sort it out if its already whooping the GTS in some, and in some cases beating the GTX with its apparently poor performing AA, jesus its gona wipe out the Ultra when they fix it!!!.
