Which 8800?

I intend to buy a Dell 30" TFT, I'm currently running a 7900GT, and want to order a 8800 - which one though? I'm presuming a GTX, but again which one?

I don't really want to end up running SLI to be honest, as that would be a bit OTT?

Need quick advice, as want to order today hopefully..

It's an Opty 165 @ 2.7Ghz atm, I'm upgrading all of it, but in stages. I'm undecided whether to just go and buy a C2D or wait until AMD releases it's new chips and see what they are like, so decided at the moment to replace GFX card and monitor whilst deciding..

Mem is cheapo 2Gb PC3200.

PSU is an Antec TruPower 550W.

The 8800 GTX would be decent along-side a C2D, and that PSU will be no problem. I have the same PSU running a GTS and its excellent. I would invest in a C2D if I was you. Get an aftermarket cooler and clock the C2D and you would have a time machine!!! :)

The BFG is a good option, I was just suggesting the eVGA as it has a better cooler on it and its quieter.

8800GTX, 30" Monitor. New CPU???? Why?.

An X2 3800+ @ stock speed would probably be fine as the higher the resolution the less the CPU has to do. Your Opty is running at FX61 speeds (yep, I gave it a new name :p) so it will do as well as any Conroe bad boy for gaming at higher res's.

Stick with your Opty and enjoy your gaming done by your GPU other than forking out some money and wasting time getting a system that will not rock your world of games. You are perfectly right in waiting for AMD's answer to Conroe and then make your decision. Unless you want to show off to your friends how fast you can .rar a file up or encode a DVD  .

I'll be honest, I'd like to keep the Opty for a while - I'm just playing Vanguard at the moment, and it's juddery as hell - hoping the 8800 will play it with ease.. I'm currently playing on a 20" TFT at 1600x1200. Can't bear to play at lower resolutions than that!

[Sarcasm]What about a downgrade in CPU then? :p :D .[/Sarcasm]

At that resolution it has to be the graphics. My cards a bit faster than yours and the 640Mb GTS is a bit faster than mine. The GTX is a little faster than the 640mb GTS.

640mb GTS would do you well but with a 30" screen then it's deffo GTX all the way!!!!.

Still can't decide whether to go BFG or EVGA - is the EVGA really worth the extra despite having lower core speed? I have my basket open with a Tuniq in it (ooer!) and keep hovering the mouse over the two!

Are you in desperate need to fix this game or could you wait around 3 weeks for 8900 to come out and a new choice of cards with more power?. I was about to get a 640mb GTS as my 22" only does 1680x1050 so a GTX would be overkill, then Easyrider and LoadsaMoney talked some sense into me and I can easily hold on. Just wanted to spend cash but now I'm content in waiting a few weeks for better options.

If that's the case, then it seems worth going for the EVGA, as they let you upgrade the card within 90 days to a better model, and give you back the full purchase price towards another card.

How much memory you got now? The current graphics card you have isn't bad at all to be honest, I would put the poor performance down to memory and CPU!

OMG why have you mentioned the CPU again???? . 1600x1200, 30" screen, Opty @ FX61 speeds. C'mon. How much do you want this guy to have a Conroe lol. How far will you go  . It will have no effect on his gaming when at the resolution mentioned above so a CPU is really pointless.

You could be right on the memory side though. I've never seen or played Vanguard so I don't know what it needs for smooth operation at 1600x1200.
