The post above from Tute is really helpful for me because the benchmarks include the X1950 Pro which is the card I have right now. Its interesting to see how it compares to the 8800GTS.

I went from a 512mb x1800 XT, this 320mb card totally decimates it, Oblivion 1280x1024 16xAA/16xAF high quality texturing, HDR on, Multisampling, this card just hammers throught it, could my x1800 at all that quality, not a chance, on my x1800 XT 512mb i had to have 2xAA/16xAF everything maxed with HDR on, and i was getting between 32-42fps outdoors (v-sync on), now 320mb GTS ive got 16xAA/16xAF high quality texturing on, Multisampling on and outdoors is getting between 44-60fps (v-sync on), it just totally blows the x1800 512mb away, as it does the x1900's/x1950's, up to 16x12 the 320mb is absolutely fine. :)

That's fair enough but there must have been something really wrong with your X1800XT if it wasn't giving you playable framerates at 1280x1024.

I wouldn't dream of swapping mine over now, I was tempted before release but I can't make my X1950XTX struggle on my friend's 1600x1200, let alone my 1280x1024 TFT!

There was nothing wrong with it at all, that was just Oblivion, that was perfectly playable to me, no complaints x1800 was an awesome card, it was still cutting through everything maxed fine for me, i didn't need to upgrade at all, but for only £199 it had to be done. :)

wouldnt u get more fps if you turned off vsync?

i have a question , doom3 and newer games would need 512mb vram for best settings would that apply if you ran at 1280x1024 or just higher res or res doe not matter because textures need to be loaded to vram?

hope i was clear LOL

Agreed 8800 320mb be good for 1280.

Though Oblivian with 512mb texture pack & the grass etc. turned up in the ini file, stresses even a gts at 630/2ghz.

When is Crysis released? would a 8800 320mb be good enough for that? Would a 8800gtx be enough?

lol that link made me laugh mate!

What is the guys question? what is the best card to run at 1280x1024? Honestly did he not ask that? well you showed him what resolution ;) yes exactly, 1960*1200 now the 320mb GTS is fine at 1280x1024 and is the same speed as the 640 so that benchmark isnt relevent to the question!

Id save the cash get the 320 then add it to something else :) I mean if you really want the 640 go for it though
