Hello im after a chip to put in my dfi baord and stuch between 2.

San Diego 3700 for 50inc (E4)
San Diego 3700 for 55inc (E6)
Venice 3000 39inc

is the extra cache on the first 2 worth the extra heat and money???

The 3700s clock quite well and perform quite well. If you can afford it get a 3800x2 or 4400x2. If not then any opteron or the 3700 is your next best choice

In your situation I would probably go for a multi-core (X2 or Opteron) to keep the upgrade 'bug' at bay a while longer

Would there be much of an increase in performance between one of them and an Opty 144 @ 2.8ghz to make it worth while swapping?

Definietly go for dual core, I'm using my HTPC (3700) to convert FLAC to MP3 and it's really killing it, have to set low priority for the encoder, and still sluggish in Media Portal.

I had the same convertin on my X2 even in highest priority still perfectly usable (around 81% total use)
