I have had a new asus AC-68U set up for a couple of Months but had nothing but problems.
Continuous disconnections from the dsl etc.
I am with PlusNet a quick google shows many people have experienced issues.

Yesterday the asus router finally gave up and wouldn't connect. So rummaging through the cupboard I pull out my trusty draytek 120 modem and D-link DIR 655 router and all is working fine.

But I would like to replace it with an ac router, so the question is which one?
looking for best wifi performance and range possible.

Looking in the same price range about £150 but may pay a little more. Not interested in Marketing gumph, just want a solid reliable wifi router that does the job.

Suggestions please?

BT HH5 or Plusnet Hub One? Both able dirt cheap and tick most boxes if you don't need anything too exotic.

Or one of the above teamed with a UniFi access point?

Like the idea of the UniFi AP.
I have a netgear GS308P switch which has 4xPoE ports apparantly 802.3af
The UniFi AP uses 803.2at PoE

Would some kind sole please explain the difference and if they are compatible I have spent an hour googling and there are many mixed opinions

According to the specs the UAP-AC-PRO supports:

Passive Power over Ethernet (48V), 802.3af/803.2at Supported
(Supported Voltage Range: 44 to 57VDC)

The UniFi access points come with injectors in the box anyway.

You can save quite a bit by choosing the UAP-AC-LITE or UAP-AC-LR. They use passive PoE but as I the injector is included it's a minor issue.

Am i being dense here but how will a AP work without a Router, or are you saying you'd use what bremen1874 suggested plus a switch?

My mistake, I'd use what bremen1874 suggested plus the switch.

I tried to improve my WiFi by buying the asus AC68U and thought doing away with the draytek 120 was a good option.
I think the suggestions here have really helped, so looking to re-use the draytek 120 (reliable) use a basic router which will be connected to the switch with PoE. For the WiFi the Ubiquiti AP.

All good components in their own right ;) reminds me of the good old days of HiFi seperates, but now I'm showing my age:D

As said you don't need a router with PoE as the AP's come with PoE power injectors. If you do go PoE Router route bare in the mind that only the AP AC Pro supports full PoE.

I ditched my ASUS RT-AC87U in favour of using a UAP-AC-PRO combined with my Virgin Superhub 3 set to modem only mode. Much better wifi around the house now.
