i'm going for the ati. it's a lot cheaper for a start. well actually that's my only reason - although i haven't seen any benchmarks, i'm not spending any more than 200 notes for a new card. :)

I don't know but what i do know is the Gainward 7800GS+ i bought of Oc owns.
A stonking card that'll kick the bejesus out of any game curently out.
Runs super cool under load at 49c so has a good effect on overall ambient temps. Fan is quieter than my CPU cooler so noise is Not an issue. Control panel and available progs to tweak are a joy to use. Clocking potential is Huge. 91.47 drivers i am using loaded without a problem and handles everything smoothly.
Picture quality and general use the card is absolutely wonderful. I loaded Oblivion the other day, it auto selected Ultra high and plays as smooth as silk.
Loves BF2, owns RFactor, eats COD2 and laughs at Oblivion and even knocks up around 8172 on 3D Mark 05 with loads more room an all.
Not bad for an AGP card and a 939 set up i must say.

So as an Actual owner/user i can Highly recommend the Gainward 7800GS+. I can also say that the GS+ is the King of AGP.

I should add that as i have only had it a month or so i have not pushed it at all in the clocking department. The figures i give are all within warranty settings and as most know these clock well very well in fact.

The X1950Pro is cheaper and faster, with better image quality. It's also manufactured on the new 80nm process so it's nowhere near as hot and loud as previous ATI cards.

That 80nm process should allow some additional overclocking.....

I thought the x1950 pro was slower than the x1800 xt?

The 7800 GS has 20 pipes like the 7900 GT and really is similar speeds to the 7900 GT

The 7900 GT and X1800 are similar in perfromance.

I would say that the 7800 GS is faster than the x1950...

I maybe wrong

well the 7800gs does have 20 pipes but it is equivalent to a 7800gt. it's the 7800gs+ which is equivalent to a 7900gt (it has 24 pipes). only basing this on what i've read on the ocuk site...... :p

as for being faster, who knows? i'd like to see some proper benchmarks using the same agp hardware first. and even if the 7800gs+ does come out on top, is it worth the extra £83 over the x1950pro? :)

It is slightly slower but with the 80nm process it's also very cool from all accounts I've heard of it, and rippling just bought one that's actually blazing 3D Mark 06 considering it's not meant to be a high-end part.

It's faster than the 7800GS+ though from what someone was saying when referencing benchmarks around here. Cheaper too, which is the main bonus.

I think the X1950 Pro will be the best value for money.

Seems to be slightly faster than a 7900GT (which is what the 7800GS+ is) and is much cheaper too.

Go for the ATI.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I was leaning towards the ATI card myself, due to the price difference. Having read through the posts in here it now seems that the ATI is the way to go :)

If anyone comes up with any regerence benchmarks etc please post them in here for us all to have a gander at.

Thanks for the help :D

I second that. (Answer NO) ;)
I am running a P4 3.2 (478) and will clock but I don`t know if it is gonna be too much of a bottleneck. I do game at 1600 x 1200, although my current card (X800XT) plays BF2142 on the highest settings with 2xAA fine at this res.

got the gainward 7800GS+ 512 which is the 7900GT core. (24 pipes)
mine clocks to 600/1500 and scores just under 10k on 3dmark05.
its quiet and plays games like you'd expect a 79GT to.
i had ATi previously but prefer the nvidia drivers for ease of use.
obviously you pays yer money and takes yer choice. i am just giving this card a great recommendation as i have one and it does exactly as i expected.
