I am upgrading my mates rig, He has 1GB RAM and the CPU is an Athlon XP2200+, same as my old system. He is looking for a graphics card, he is obviously limited to AGP. He has £120 to spend, what would you recommend, i've been looking at 6600, X800 and X1600. I can see limitations with the X1600 cos of the GDDR2 RAM compared to the GDDR3 used in the other cards. He wants to play BF2 and he currently runs CS:S and DOD:S no problems although low settings, i know that a better graphics card will allow him to run BF2 on med settings as i used to run it at med settings on my identical setup with ATI 9800 Pro. Any help greatly appreciated.

PS dont have my old 9800 as gave it to another friend

PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-050-PC) Price: £99.95 (£117.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Agree, id stay away from the x1600 as its an atrocious card. :)

For your budget the best best would be an X800GTO. Other than that, if you can stretch a bit an excellent choice would be a 6800GS. Either of them will give a considerable boost in performance compared to a 9800Pro.

cheers for the help guys, was thinkin the x800 cos it seems to offer good spec at the budget. I've been using that sig for ages no comments from admin as yet. This should be good news to my mate as he has had BF2 since christmas but cant play it, lol.

EDIT: Compacted my sig

Is that the card that is flashable to unlock the extra pipelines?

I think that was the X800GTO2. But that one may be able to. Even if you did, you'd be running an X850XT-PE in theory.. and that might get limited

Even a 9800Pro will be limited by a 1.8ghz athlon xp (the 2200+). I'd seriously consider a switch to PCI-Express+A64...

No there was no bottleneck with a 9800 pro, if u read he hasnt got the budget to do that, if he had the budget i wouldnt need any advice. Some people trying to be too clever?

What games does he play? Sorry, but an XP2200 is a bit slow for today's games. I'm aware budget's an issue, hence the word *consider*.

I noticed a big difference going from an XP2400+ to a 3000 winchester.

Let me re-iterate:

I played CS:S and DOD:S on hi on my old rig with 9800 pro at 50 fps, granted no FSAA or anisotropic but it looked fine, BF2 ran at about 50-60 on med detail.

Anyway thanks for your help guys
