Hi,

I need to get a new mobo as my one has just died. I have a 4200 X2 cpu and OCZ xtc gold ddr800 RAM. Can anyone recommend an AM2 mobo for about £50ish which is going to work OK with my RAM and oc reasonably, i.e. get to about 250-260 fsb. I would just look myself but obviosly I don't have any internet which makes trying to choose a mobo a bit of a pain.

If you don't need firewire abit AX78 is good - obviously not as many people are buying AMD mobos atm as Intel but I've yet to see 1 bad word against the AX78 (other than SB600 isn't earth shattering but that isn't abit's fault).

+1 ax78

it (should) run xfire if you want to, clocks to atleast 286 fsb (what i have mine at) 4 memory slots, decent combo of pci slots with good spacing, supports latest gfx, supports phenom...

be warned, its a little light on sata/ide ports (4sata/1 ide) and you will need your own blank floppy to make a sata driver disk, but you DONT need another pc to make the disk, the mobo driver cd is bootable and has a utility to make the disk.

i have a asrock am2nf6g vsta running with 4200x2 + 2x1 gb mixed unbranded. i can get 240 on the fsb before bluescreen. minus overeclocking, this board has been superb. im sure you can get more on the fsb with your ram.

we are just building up a list of RAM reported to be OK on the AX78.
So far the only 1 that I have seen posted not working was some Patriot (it booted OK but wasn't stable).
Reported OK so far.
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2 6400 TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX
Corsair XMS2 4Gb (2x2GB) Dominator PC2-8500 TWIN2X4096-8500C5D
Crucial Ballistix/Ballistix Tracer PC8500 2x1Gb
G.Skill 6400 F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK
G.Skill 6400 HZ F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ
G.Skill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ
Geil Ultra DDR2-800
OCZ Platinum DDR2 800 (OCZ2P800FR2GK)
OCZ 6400 Platinum Rev 2 XTC (OCZ2P800R22GK)
OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2 6400 (OCZ2G8004GK)

you can add G.Skill 8500 F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK to the list, runs perfectly out of the bag (defaults to 800 @ 5-5-5-15)
but will run 1066 easily when ocing/manually setting - the bios doesnt show 1066mhz as an option on X2's, so you have to fiddle multi/fsb to get it tho.

is there somewhere to report compatibility, if i come cross others using the board

Just got the AX-78, seems good so far, definatly a lot more stable than the MSI board I had.

One question though, does it normally beep a few times after a restart? Every time I reboot from windows it sounds like a siren. The board seems to work fine though.

if you have a hi lo siren sound that will be because either a temp, voltage or fan rpm is outside the set warning parameters (which you can adjust).
Could just be the CPU fan being slow to spin up.
