I am planning on upgrading from my Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester), which is currently clocked at 2.65Ghz to an AMD X2, but I am not sure which one.

What would you guys recommend with the best overclocking potential?

3800's generally overclock well but they dont have the 2x1mb l2 cache. To be honest good luck finding any dual core s939 cpus now

I have seen some new ones in various online shops, but most likely I will try and get one from MM when it reopens or from eBay.

I was thinking of getting the 4400+ - is that any good?

What is MM? Heard a lil bit about it recently but haven't been here long enough to know what it is..!

depends on the age, I had an early 4400 and it struggled to get past 2.6ghz on water and wouldn't go past 2.9 on phase.. I then got a later 3800 which did 3ghz on water and 3.4 on phase.

Someone told me the additional 512mb cache made about 100mhz difference, not sure how verifiable that is but I was certainly happier with my 3800.

I'd save your money and get one of them, they ALL seem to clock well :)

Or an opteron 165 or 170

my 170 did 2.8ghz on 1.375v

dunno why but I always assumed they held their value better than the athlons? ie an athlon x2 3800/4400 would be cheaper although I see your point on low voltage clocking.

I sold my last 3800 for £95.. less than a ton for something that did 3ghz in a shuttle... awesome value.
