which apple keyboard?

hi all,

looking for a good cheap apple keyboard to use with my macbook pro (closed lid mode) so that i can use it as a desktop along with my usb mouse. I dont really fancy going wireless. Was thinkin that the white apple keyboards might get discoloured and dirty rather quickly?

Any recommendations are welcome. Cheers

They do get quite mingy.

Mine's all full of ash and fluff and bits of food, and it all falls through to the bottom and is very visible because of the design. If you smoke, drink or eat much at your PC it'll look nasty pretty quick. Mine's not discoloured at all though.

there wont be smoke, drink or food anywhere near it! What keyboard is it that you have?

I switched to the white apple wired keyboard just before christmas for my work desktop.

My last few keyboards have been fairly shocking messes, burnt keys, and all the muck you might expect.

The Apple keyboard, perversely, because it is so shiny, I treat with more respect.

A month it has retained it's sheen - so I can heartily recommend it.

Gotta be the perspex G5/Intel style. It's what I'm using to type this post. It's a darn good keyboard and looks very nice when kept tidy. I wish it had better key feel but it seems to sacrifice quietness for my tactile pleasure. I guess I'm just a sucker for buckling-spring keyboards.

I also have two G4-style keyboards, black and white. They both have the same key feel but the white has gone a very nasty shade of brownish yellow from sitting in the sun for 5 years.

If you're looking for a very compact keyboard I think you'd enjoy the tiny iMac G3 keyboards. They're about 15 inches wide. :eek:

if you usb usb mouse and keyboard, how do you use the macbook with closed lid?
I can wake it by using bluetooth devices but if i plug my mouse in and close the lid it just stays off ?
White keyboards are so nice to type on, really soft and quiet, gonna get another one soon as i sold my last one with my G4

is it the standard apple keyboard ypu are referring to? £19 in apple store?


Regarding closed lid mode - I was thinking just plug the two usb cables in and close the lid and use my widescreen monitor instead. However, usually closing the lid puts my MBP to sleep. Can this be changed?

The Macbook Pro works fine with the lid closed as did the PowerBook.

I think the MacBook and iBook have it disabled. But there is a haxie somewhere. The "screen spanning doctor" does it on my iBook. A google search for MacBook 'clamshell mode' should give you what you need.

Yeah I recall seeing it on Digg - called insomnia for the macbook ;-)

my macbook pro goes onto sleep after a few seconds with the lid closed. Do you know how I stop this? Can't find it in my energy saver options!
 
yea you just close the lid, plug the cables in and shake your bluetooth mouse :D or use your apple remote or plug somthing in to the usb.. it will wake up on your monitor...

thanks for that. i take it there is no overheating problems when running in clamshell mode?
 
none at all... its a support configuration.... hence i find the macbook the best buy... not much more expensive than a mac mini but can do it all and its portable! no bad eh?

yeah ive experienced no over heating probs... thing runs sweet

That's the boy :)

The black G4 style keyboards are some of my favourite keyboards ever, I tried for ages to find one a while back to match my PC to no avail :( - Well I did find one, but £40 for a second hand keyboard wasn't going to happen :D
 
You can't beat the Apple Pro keyboard, I use one on my PC, it does end up getting full of food/dust etc but a run over with the hoover attachment sorts that out.
