hi all, having just found my old Asus ATi AX800 XT dead, i am after a replacement. i am way out of touch with todays availability. can anybody advise what i should go for now?

it needs to be an AGP to fit this board and preferably not more than £100. i saw this one..

Asus ATI Radeon HD 3650 Vcool Silent 512MB DDR2

and just wondered if this is the right way to go or is there something better i should aim for? i have a 1080P Tv and sometimes hook the rig upto it so HD 1080p card sounds nice.

any advice appreciated, even if it is £10-30 more but preferably within £100

QlimaxUK, some of us are waiting for the right time to move on and some of us are just old fashioned :D

thanks for the advise. just a question on that card...

as some of the older ATi cards were renoun for bad cooling, will that fan on there be ok? i remember when i 1st bought the X800 XT, playing CSS overheated it and i had to buy an arctic cooler.

I have never had any issues with the stock cooler on my Sapphire version, I did have severe issues with a 1950 Pro, but not this one (touch wood).

Just to note though, the 3850 does require a decent PSU.

thanks for that. currently i have a Tagan silent True 480W but i am running 4 sata HDD's and a lot of gear off it so i might have to upgrade to a 550-600W. so far though, this has been the best PSU i have ever had.

It might be worth considering upgrading to LGA775 now I think, why pay over £100 for a card thats really only worth ~£40... Could get a CPU/MOBO/RAM/HD3850 bundle for the price of one AGP HD3850 (if you buy second hand and shop around of course)

P965 (MM) - ~25
e2140 (MM) - ~20
2Gb DDR2 (MM) ~£15
PCI-e 3850 (MM) ~£40

Total = £100 . £5 less than the AGP card is new but you get the added bonus of running a C2D @ ~3.2Ghz, your 2Gb of RAM @ 800Mhz and a full speed PCI-e slot running a HD3850.

Just my 2 cents...
