About to fit a x1950 pro gfx card and went to Sapphire site to download latest drivers and the following came up:

1) AVIVO Xcode for X1k/HD2k/HD3k/HD4k Series 4287.3KB Download Now Jul 22nd, 2008

2) Catalyst 8.7 Windows XP (64-bit) 44001KB Download Now Jul 22nd, 2008

3) Catalyst 8.7 Windows XP CCC only! (german language)(32-bit and 64-bit OS) 26434.7KB Download Now Jul 22nd, 2008

4) WDM Driver Catalyst 8.7 Windows XP (32bit and 64bit) 4082.8KB Download Now Jul 22nd, 2008

5) Catalyst 8.7 Windows XP (32-bit) 36377.8KB Download Now Jul 22nd, 2008

Too much choice! Which one(s) do I need to download to get my card to work without installing anything not really necessary? My OS is XP Pro.

I've read the sticky about uninstalling the old drivers, in my case nVidia, using Drive Sweeper but do I really need to go into Safe Mode?

I used both driver sweeper and driver cleaner pro in normal mode. I had geforce in before getting the 4870 & worked ok :)

So will Catalyst suite slow my pc down?

Not directly, but having lots of unnecessary programs at start up will slow it down and make it feel laggy until they all get up and running.

The question is : Will you use the control centre? change the colour pitch, flip the screen round, etc. No? then don't bother with it. It also increases the size of your download. I know that isn't much of a problem in our country but some people have to PAYG internet.
