I am looking to upgrade my graphics card - having upgraded everything else (cheers for the help with that all):

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz
Asus M4A79XTD Evo (Socket AM3)
4GB G.Skill
Gainward 8800GT 512MB
Corsair 650W
21" monitor (1680x1050)

After looking through these forums I have short listed the follow:

ATI HD 5770 or ATI HD 5850. (Nvidia seem to expensive atm)

The 5770s are more in my budget (£150) but I like to buy the best I can afford at the time. I prefer to spend that extra now rather then wish I had a year down the line. So with the 5850 the most I will go is £230ish (but the difference would have to be enormous :p).

Now the baffling thing is all the memory speeds etc of the different makes.

For the 5770 I was looking at either:

(though as it doesnt have any reviews and now out of stock - its abit, well iffy)

For the 5850, well any of the 3 below £230 :)

Anyone with any idea or recommendations? I was going to wait and see if prices would be coming down in the next month if any new cards were coming out.

5850 will be much better in the long term.. 'Future proof wise'

Go for whichever is the cheapest an available. I'd be looking at Asus, XFX, Sapphire.. in that order ;)

5850, you have basically told us you want it and can afford it, you just need to justify it to yourself by all the money you will save whilst staying in gaming. ;)

Because if like me you cannot stand screen tearing etc you have vsync on which stops it but also limits the frames per second to the monitors refresh rate which is normally 60.The 5770 is hitting 60 fps or much more with most games at 1680-1050 even with AA and AF.

I myself almost went for a 5850 recently but after a look round I found that I'd be able to get 60 fps or more with a 5770 @1680-1050 and saw a good deal on one so bought it.

well.... :D

I just dont like buying something then find that if I had spent that little extra, or gotten this one instead... :) I like to do a lot of research.

I do not use v-sync, never really had any problems with tearing.

I have read about these 5830's and was waiting to hear more (another thing i was hoping someone would mention) as I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that they would be an inbetween. Though I cant see anything about them.

WHat if I bought a new monitor at a later date? If it happened to be a higher res (thinking forward here) would the higher card be better?
